EA Sports College Football 25: A Deep Dive into Gameplay Features

After a hiatus of over a decade, the much-anticipated return of college football gaming has arrived with EA Sports College Football 25 (CFB25). Developed using the Frostbite Engine by EA Orlando (formerly EA Tiburon), this title aims to capture the essence of college football while introducing new gameplay mechanics and features. This article delves into the various aspects of CFB25, from its core gameplay to its different modes and customization options.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

Faster Gameplay

One of the primary tenets of CFB25 is its faster gameplay. Players move more quickly, creating a more dynamic and responsive experience compared to Madden. This increased speed affects both offensive and defensive plays, demanding quicker reactions and strategic decision-making.

Passing Precision

Passing is a critical component of CFB25, emphasizing timing and accuracy. The game introduces two primary passing types:

  • Placement & Accuracy: This passing type allows players to gauge the arc of the ball while also choosing where the ball lands. This offers a more dialed-in experience, enabling precise throws to specific spots on the field.
  • Revamped Passing: While the user can still gauge the arc of the ball, there’s no control over where the ball is placed.

Leading a receiver is another game-changing aspect of passing. This involves anticipating a WR’s route and throwing the ball to where they will be, rather than where they currently are. To effectively lead the receiver, players must:

  • Anticipate the receiver's route.
  • Throw the ball to the spot where they will be, considering their speed and the defender's position.
  • Identify a defender's position.

Ball Carrier Controls

Once the ball is caught or handed off to a running back, players have a variety of moves at their disposal:

  • Jukes and Hesitations: Swift jukes and hesitations can break ankles and create separation from defenders.
  • Hurdling: Players can hurdle over defenders to gain extra yards.
  • Spinning: Spinning out of tackles can help avoid being brought down.
  • Pitching: Players can pitch the ball back to a teammate to extend the play.

Mastering these skills and using them in the right context is essential for maximizing yardage.

Defensive Strategies

Defensively, players can switch between controlling the Defensive Line or the Secondary. The Defensive Line aims to rush past the offensive line to limit runs or sack the QB, while the Secondary is responsible for covering wide receivers, intercepting passes, and making tackles.

Tackling System

The tackling system in CFB25 requires precision and timing. Traditional, button-based tackling is recommended, emphasizing the importance of facing the ball carrier and anticipating their direction. The "hit stick" tackling, while historically popular, is now riskier and less effective. To improve tackling, players can:

  • Utilize player lock with the left analog stick.
  • Anticipate the direction of the ball carrier.

Dominating the line of scrimmage is crucial for defensive success. Players can use quick analog movements to execute swim moves, rips, bull rushes, or club/swim movements at the right moment to disrupt the opposing team's offense.

Pre-Snap Recognition

Pre-Snap Recognition makes the decision behind every snap matter more. Players must decide whether to trust their high-skill seniors or take a risk with their untested freshmen. This system adds depth to the strategic elements of the game.

Wear & Tear System

As the hits add up, players wear down. This Wear & Tear system simulates the physical toll of the game, impacting player performance and requiring strategic substitutions.

Homefield Advantage

Game-altering homefield advantages rattle rivals in college football's toughest places to play. This feature captures the intensity and atmosphere of college stadiums, influencing player performance and creating unique challenges.

Game Modes

In Road to Glory, players create a QB (Quarterback) and modify how much exp you earn as well.

In Road to College Football Playoffs, players pick a team that is categorized by tiers and play against other players online. There’s even cross-platform play and you’re able to communicate with the opponent with a connected headset/mic.

Presentation and Visuals

Visual Fidelity

Running the game on a Series X, the resolution looks to be 1440p upscaled to 4k. The frame rate when in action is a buttery smooth 60fps but will drop to a locked 30fps in cinematics and transitions. While this may sound jarring, it’s hardly noticeable during gameplay.

Studio Updates

As fans of College Football, we know that week-to-week games are happening at all times. Through studio updates, you'll be informed of the latest news from around the country. Long-time ESPN Studio Host, Kevin Connors, will be jumping in from time to time to call out national upsets, scores for games you care about in your conference, or updates on how your rival is doing when in Dynasty mode. These updates will happen whether you are playing in a Dynasty that is offline or online.

Commentary Team

The commentary throughout the matches is provided by either the broadcast team or the big game team, enhancing the immersive experience.

Music

The game’s soundtrack is full of marching band horns and drums.

NIL and Licensing

Following the resolution of a lawsuit concerning the use of player name, image, and likeness (NIL) without permission or compensation, EA Sports has worked to include real players in CFB25. All 134 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs are featured in the game.

Challenges and Controversies

PC Release

Unfortunately, CFB25 is not available on PC at launch, which has disappointed some fans. EA has cited concerns about modding and potential legal risks related to NIL as reasons for this decision.

Game Clock

Some players feel they’ve made the game almost too complicated.

Achievements

Some achievements here may be bugged. For example, the specific one that was glitched for me was the achievements titled “playoff bound”.
