Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program: Empowering Future STEM Educators
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), addresses the crucial need for qualified K-12 teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By providing scholarships, stipends, and programmatic support to institutions of higher education, the program aims to recruit and prepare talented STEM students and professionals for careers in teaching, particularly in high-need school districts. The program seeks to increase the number of K-12 teachers with strong STEM content knowledge who teach in high-need school districts.
Program Overview
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program responds to the critical need for K-12 teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by encouraging talented STEM students and professionals to pursue teaching careers in elementary and secondary schools. The program provides funding to institutions of higher education to provide scholarships, stipends, and programmatic support to recruit and prepare STEM majors and professionals to become K-12 teachers. Scholarship and stipend recipients are required to complete two years of teaching in a high-need school district for each year of support.
Scholarship Benefits and Opportunities
Noyce scholars can earn significant scholarships. Scholarships cover tuition, fees, room and board, and books as well as other college-related costs and Scholars could receive over $40,000 in scholarships by graduation. The grant also provides funds for NOYCE Scholars to attend professional conferences and events each year at the local, regional, and national levels.
Noyce scholars will participate in program coordination and planning of SHSU COSET STEM camp and local area community service projects. Noyce scholars will complete their field-based experiences and clinical teaching semesters at their assigned school districts. Monthly dinners and a community network of other STEM scholars and SHSU faculty, staff and community mentors. Scholars will also participate in professional development and mentoring opportunities from Noyce scholar alumni to ensure they are prepared for service in the classroom.
As part of the MU-Noyce Program, Noyce scholars will be engaged in the immersion activities offered by Miami’s Urban Cohort in the Over-the-Rhine (OTR) community in Cincinnati as they complete their degree in integrated mathematics education or science education program.

Students in the NOYCE program participate in a wide variety of activities to prepare them to be effective educators, including a seminar on teaching in high-needs districts, STEM teaching workshops, summer research experiences, in-depth mentoring and advising, and test preparation for content exams. Additionally, interested students can participate in the new Learning Assistant program at Black Hawk College, use agreements to facilitate transfers, and receive support from an advisor.

Applicants to the Noyce Scholarship Program must also apply for or have been accepted to UVA's M.T. in Science Education program.
Specific Requirements at UVA
At the UVA School of Education and Human Development, the Noyce scholarship is awarded to students pursuing the M.T. in Science Education program. We have 40 scholarships available for students who are admitted into the M.T. (science) degree program.
To be eligible for the Noyce Scholarship Program, candidates typically must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident alien
- Be interested in a career in teaching
- Have a prior degree in Science or Engineering or a related STEM area
- Have a GPA of 3.0 and above in a previous field of study
- Be admitted to the M.T. in Science Education program at UVA
Teaching Commitment
As a recipient of an $18,000 Noyce Scholarship award, you will commit to teaching at a high-need school district anywhere in the United States for 3.5 years. Scholars must complete this teaching commitment within six years of earning their M.T.

The Noyce Scholarship Program requires that each scholarship recipient teaches for 2 years for every $10,000 in scholarship funds received. Students may choose to teach in a high-need school district anywhere in the United States.
Noyce Scholars are required to teach in a high needs school system for two years for every year they have received a Noyce Scholarship. Scholarship recipients are required to complete two years of teaching math in a high-needs school district anywhere in the United States for each year of support received. For each semester aid is awarded, the NOYCE scholar commits to 1 year of teaching in a high needs district.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
If you are unable to complete your degree or meet your teaching service commitment, you will be required to repay the amount of your Noyce support, plus any applicable interest.
Program Examples at Various Universities
University of Virginia (UVA)
At the UVA School of Education and Human Development, the Noyce scholarship is awarded to students pursuing the M.T. in Science Education program. We have 40 scholarships available for students who are admitted into the M.T. (science) degree program. Each student will receive $18,000 per year. Through the M.T. in Science Education program, students will graduate with a Virginia state teaching license.
Penn State Harrisburg
The Penn State Harrisburg NSF Noyce Scholarship is a Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program that seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors and professionals to become grades 7-12 mathematics teachers in high-needs school districts. At Penn State Harrisburg, the scholarships are awarded to undergraduates pursuing a B.A. Undergraduate sophomores eligible to pursue the B. A. Noyce Scholars will be paired with local teachers from high-need school districts who will serve as mentors. Noyce Scholars will also work with teachers who have completed the Penn State Harrisburg Mathematics Coaching program, who will serve as external mentors. The Penn State Harrisburg Noyce Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, is now accepting applications for the undergraduate scholarships and post-baccalaureate stipends to be awarded.

Western Illinois University (WIU)
As part of the NOYCE grant at WIU, Juniors and Seniors majoring in STEM fields and seeking a teaching license can earn significant scholarships at WIU. NOYCE scholars can earn up to $8000 or more per semester for up to 5 semesters while finishing their degree and secondary licensing program. For each semester aid is awarded, the NOYCE scholar commits to 1 year of teaching in a high needs district.
Miami University
In 2017, Miami University was awarded by the NSF Robert Noyce Program to provide $15,000 tuition support to the undergraduate and $20,000 tuition support to graduate Noyce scholars.
