Schreiner University: A Legacy of Achievement
Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Schreiner University in Kerrville stands as a testament to the enduring values of education, community, and adaptability. Established in 1923 as Schreiner Institute, the university has evolved into a comprehensive liberal arts institution committed to shaping well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges of the future. This article explores the history, academic programs, notable alumni, and enduring legacy of Schreiner University.
From Institute to University: A Historical Overview
Captain Charles Schreiner Sr. founded "Schreiner Institute" in 1917, working towards its establishment until 1923. The Presbyterian Church and the Presbytery of Western Texas were also key founders of the university. Initially a residential school for young boys, the military institute included both secondary school and junior college curricula to prepare students for further education. In 1971, military training was discontinued, and in 1973, the institution transitioned to a college curriculum, changing its name to "Schreiner College." The college experience evolved once more in 1981 when it became a four-year college. The 21st century brought about another milestone in the institution’s history. In 2001, Schreiner College officially became Schreiner University, a name that better encapsulated its diverse academic offerings and commitment to academic excellence. The Weir Academic Building remains to this day as the university’s administrative building, still seeing students grace its door 100 years after its initial construction.
Academic Excellence and Innovation
Schreiner University offers over 40 four-year undergraduate programs, an MBA, and a Master of Education. The university is also home to Schreiner Institute, a college-level service academy preparatory program for those who did not receive appointments or nominations straight out of high school, ROTC, and veteran services. The institution is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award masters, baccalaureate, and associate degrees.
Schreiner University’s pursuit of academic excellence and innovation has spurred new programs and initiatives that strive to enrich not just the students of the university but the local community. In 2022, Schreiner University unveiled a program designed to help students focus on an often overlooked but vital industry: rural banking. The new rural banking program is designed for accounting, finance and computer science majors as well as other relevant majors to not only receive important information about the banking and finance industry but to also gain internships at local regional banks and credit unions. Another recent addition to the university’s programming is a new academic program focusing on Agriculture and Natural Resource Management. The program aims to help students find careers within the growing agricultural industry including natural resource management, fish habitats, wildlife, soil and rangeland. The program, which is set to start accepting students in 2024, celebrated its founding by planting a vineyard. This year, Schreiner University unveiled a new Aviation program in conjunction with the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport.
A Commitment to Community Engagement
Beyond academic pursuits, Schreiner University places a strong emphasis on community engagement. The university has forged strong ties with the Kerrville community, participating in local initiatives, service projects, and cultural events.

A Tribute to Frank Denius
Schreiner University mourns the loss of Frank Denius, a donor, distinguished alumni and friend of the University. One of America’s most highly decorated veterans of World War II, receiving four Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts, Denius returned home and distinguished himself at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his law degree in 1949 and soon developed a reputation as one of Texas’ top lawyers and civic leaders. Denius arrived in Kerrville to enroll in Schreiner Institute in 1938. He remembers that the “rules were definite, and the discipline was demanding.” According to Denius Schreiner taught me “discipline, how to study and I learned people.” He remembers fondly the close fellowship among and between fellow cadets. Another day etched in Denius’ mind was Pearl Harbor Day. All cadets were immediately summoned to campus. Denius said, “Military training and the discipline that went with it became part of my life. Denius was recognized as a UT Distinguished Alumnus in 1991, and in 2017 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Law Alumni Association.
