Academic Requirements for Admission

Admission requirements at Seneca Polytechnic vary depending on the program type:

Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma Programs

Applicants for certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma programs must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or its equivalent, or qualify as a mature applicant. Minimum grades in specific prerequisite courses at the college preparatory level (C) are also required. Program-specific prerequisites are detailed on each program page. The minimum passing grade for prerequisite courses is 50% unless otherwise specified.

Graduate Certificate Programs

To be eligible for graduate certificate programs, applicants must have completed an Ontario college or university degree, diploma, or its equivalent.

Degree Programs

Admission to degree programs requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a minimum of six courses at the university (U) preparatory or mixed college/university (M) level and a minimum average of 65%, or mature applicant status. Specific prerequisite subjects or courses at the (U) university preparatory or (M) mixed level are also necessary, with details listed on each program page. The minimum grade for degree prerequisite courses is 65% unless stated otherwise.

Accelerated or Articulated Programs

These programs, designed for completing a diploma in fewer semesters, require a completed postsecondary credential such as a university or college degree or diploma. Specific prerequisite programs and courses are also listed.

Additional (Non-Academic) Admission Requirements

Certain programs may have additional non-academic requirements, such as questionnaires, essays, portfolios, auditions, or tests. These mandatory requirements can influence the ranking of applicants for highly competitive programs, making timely completion essential. Distance testing arrangements can be made for applicants residing more than 100 km from the Greater Toronto commuting area.

Equivalent Credentials

Seneca Polytechnic recognizes equivalent credentials from applicants who attended secondary school in another province or country. Official transcripts are required for evaluation. Examples of equivalent credentials include:

Secondary School Graduation Diploma at General Level or equivalent from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
Quebec Secondary School Diploma Granted General Education/Diplôme d’Etudes Secondaires (DES).
Yukon Graduation Certificate.
Nunavut Secondary School Diploma.
Northwest Territories Secondary School Diploma.
International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, including English and any other required courses with passes in at least six subjects: Three Higher Level and three Standard Level.
United States of America: Grade 12 (A minimum of 16 units of credit at the Secondary School level; at least four English credits).
Great Britain: General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE or IGSCE) with four O-level subjects; General Certificate of Education Advanced or Advanced Supplementary Levels (GCE-A or AICE or GCE-AS) with at least 2 A-levels.

Secondary school diplomas from all other countries will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Transcripts from outside of Canada must be accompanied by a course-by-course credential evaluation from a recognized agency such as ICAS, WES, ICES, or IQAS.

Seneca also recognizes credentials earned at all recognized Canadian public postsecondary institutions. Seneca will consider credentials earned at Canadian private colleges, depending on the duration and relevance of the program and as long as the institution is in "good standing.” Seneca also recognizes postsecondary credentials earned outside of Canada that are accompanied by a document-by-document (general) assessment from a recognized agency such as ICAS, WES, ICES or IQAS. Some programs require previous postsecondary study at a specific level or in a specific discipline. In these cases, a course-by-course evaluation will be required. Seneca may consider partial completion of a postsecondary credential and/or significant program-related work experience. This is at the discretion of the college. In this case, applicants will be asked to submit a resume detailing relevant work and professional references.

English Proficiency for Canadian Applicants

At Seneca, all courses are taught in English and to be successful in a program, your English communication, listening, comprehension, reading and writing skills must be at a level to meet the demands of your program. Applicants to graduate certificate programs, the Practical Nursing Diploma (PND), Honours Bachelor of Aviation Technology degree (FPR) and Honours Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BSN) must demonstrate overall proficiency in English through one of the following:

Three years of successful full-time study in a secondary school (English as a Second Language "ESL" courses will not be considered) from a country where English is an official or the only language of common usage; or,
Three years of successful full-time study in a Canadian curriculum high school outside of Canada; or,
Three years of successful full-time study in a French high school in Canada with three consecutive years of English
Two full-time years of successful study in a college or university undergraduate program in an institution and country where English is an official or the only language of common usage
Successful completion of a college postgraduate certificate or university postgraduate degree, in an institution and country where English is an official or the only language of common usage
For PND, Seneca will accept successful completion of a Pre-Health Certificate from an Ontario College as proof of proficiency.

Seneca will accept the following recognized tests and scores to demonstrate proficiency. The information above is not applicable to Accelerated programs.

Critical Admission Dates

Seneca offers program intakes three times a year: September (fall), January (winter), and May (summer). However, not all programs are available during each intake. Popular or highly competitive programs may fill up quickly, so it is important to apply early.

Program Admission Sessions

Several Seneca programs have additional admission requirements that must be completed before an offer of admission is granted. These may include submitting a portfolio or completing a drawing or writing test. Applicants are encouraged to complete these steps as early as possible upon receiving an invitation.

Waitlist

Applications are considered based on the number received. Prospective students should visit Seneca’s program pages to explore the more than 180 full-time programs available.

How to Apply

Visit OntarioColleges.ca (OCAS) and create an account to start your application. The $95 application fee allows you to choose up to five programs at any of the 24 Ontario colleges, with a maximum of three programs at Seneca.
Confirm your Offer of Admission at OCAS by the due date specified in the offer letter to secure your spot in the program.
Once you confirm your offer, you will receive information about fees, including the deadline to pay the $500 non-refundable tuition deposit. Paying the deposit by the deadline guarantees your seat.

Academic Upgrading

If you do not meet the requirements for your chosen program, Seneca may recommend upgrading options such as Seneca Academic Upgrading, the Seneca English for Academic Purposes (GEA) program, Seneca Part-time studies, or adult learning through a school board.

Conditional Offers of Admission

A Conditional Offer of Admission may be issued if final grades for required programs and courses are not yet available. The conditions listed in the Offer of Admission must be met before the first day of scheduled classes.

Alternative Program Recommendations

If your chosen program is full or you do not meet the admission requirements, Seneca may suggest an alternative related program.

New Programs

Seneca Polytechnic is launching three-year bachelor’s degrees, including the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Computer Science, and Bachelor of Science - Cosmetic Science. These programs feature industry-informed experiential learning and transferable human skills. Seneca is also introducing new diploma programs and graduate certificate programs, including Business Management, Marketing & Communications Strategy, Medical Esthetics Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant and Visual Content Creation.

International Students

International students must meet both general admission and program-specific requirements.

English Language Proficiency

International students must demonstrate English language fluency through tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, CAEL, PTE, or MELAB.

Financial Support

International students must provide proof of sufficient financial support to cover tuition and living expenses while studying in Canada. Tuition fees vary based on the program and level of study.

The institution accepts applications until January for the start in September. For the January start, applications are accepted until May-October. For the May start, applications are accepted until January. It is important to note that applications will close once the quota is filled.

Seneca College and St. George’s University Partnership

St. George’s University has launched a new partnership with Seneca Polytechnic that will offer qualified Seneca students fast-track status and expedited entry into the five- or six-year MD programs at the St. George’s University School of Medicine. The partnership creates two admissions pathways to the School of Medicine: a five-year and a six-year MD track.
