  • University Learning Commons (ULC): Committed to academic success, the University Learning Commons (ULC) offers free tutoring services to St. John's students.
  • The University Writing Center: The University Writing Center provides assistance to students who want to improve their writing skills.
  • University Honors Program: The University Honors Program offers outstanding students the opportunity to maximize intellectual growth and experience personal enrichment.
  • Libraries: Students have access to extensive library resources to support their research and academic pursuits.

Community Engaged Learning (CEL)

The Office of Community Engaged Learning is available to assist students as they prepare to serve their communities virtually and in person.

  • GivePulse: GivePulse is the Community Engaged Learning platform where students can find, sign up for, and report service hours connected to their coursework. Students can tailor their search by location or virtual-only options.
  • Getting Started with CEL:
    • Review the course syllabus or speak with the professor to understand the AS-L requirement for the course, including the number of hours required, the type of service sites recommended, deadlines, and reflection assignment.
    • If taking more than one course with an AS-L component, check with both faculty members to see if the same service can be used for both courses, keeping in mind that two reflection assignments will still be required.
    • Schedule service at the start of the semester and register for service in GivePulse.
    • Serve with classmates whenever possible to enhance the experience and facilitate discussion.
    • Be professional by arriving on time, taking initiative, and being prepared.
    • Bring the agency phone number and directions, and be aware of your surroundings.
    • Be observant and jot down thoughts, ideas, and actions in a journal.
    • Be punctual and treat Academic Service-Learning as a job.
    • Record all service hours accurately in the time log and in GivePulse.
  • CEL Essay Contest: The CEL Essay Contest recognizes students who skillfully reflect on their service experience while making a concrete connection to the learning objectives of their course and discussing the larger social justice issues at play. Full-time/Part-time graduate and undergraduate students who have participated in a CEL service component in one or more of their courses are eligible.
  • The Janet E. Mangione Endowed Scholarship: This scholarship provides a tuition scholarship to an undergraduate student who has at least one full semester remaining before graduating. The recipient will be selected based on academic qualifications and need, experience in two or more CEL courses, and the ability to articulate the impact these AS-L courses have had on their academic career and/or career choices.

Technology and Online Learning

  • Canvas: St. John's University uses Canvas as its learning management system, providing a virtual classroom environment for online courses.
  • Online Learning: Online courses are comparable to on-campus courses in terms of content but often require more self-direction on the part of the student.
  • Access to Services: Online students have access to the same services as on-campus students, including library databases, writing assistance, academic advisement services, and career services.
  • Accreditation: St. John's University's online degree programs are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and registered with the New York State Education Department.
  • Personalize Your Canvas Experience: Log in and edit personalized settings in Canvas to get started.
  • Set the Stage for Learning in Canvas: Begin editing the Canvas homepage and add a course syllabus.

Navigating Canvas

  • Home Page: The Course Home Page is the first view students will see when they enter the course. Users will see course navigation on the left, and the "To-Do" list and "Coming Up" sections on the right of the page. By changing the course settings, up to 15 recent Announcements can be displayed on the Home Page. Banners, Buttons, and Text can be used to guide students to important areas of the course.
  • Course Syllabus: The Syllabus in Canvas communicates to students exactly what will be required of them throughout the course in chronological order. Items and Dates in the Syllabus are automatically generated as assignments, quizzes, discussions, calendar events, etc., are added. Syllabuses can be shared with users not currently enrolled in the course if they are made public.
  • Modules: Modules allow instructors to set the flow of the course. Content can be organized within the course by weeks, chapters, or however the instructor wants. A flow can be created so that students have to complete a module before they can view the next module in the flow. Modules offer a flexible structure and content, are easy to customize, and allow instructors to create their own course flow.
  • Publishing Content: Anything created or uploaded into Canvas will be either Published or Unpublished. When something is unpublished, only the instructor can see the content, including the entire course. Courses in the Dashboard will be categorized by Published and Unpublished courses. The course must be published so that students can access it. Students cannot take a test, submit an assignment, or view a page if it is not published.
  • Announcements: Announcements allow instructors to communicate with students about course activities and post course-related topics. If any announcements have been posted, students will see a notification on the course card when they log into Canvas. The Canvas Inbox displays all Canvas Conversations (the internal messaging system in Canvas). Students enrolled in the course are pre-populated in the address book for quick communication.
