Exploring the Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) Programs
Columbia University's School of Professional Studies (SPS) stands as a testament to the institution's commitment to evolving with the needs of modern education and professional development. Rooted in a rich history and driven by a forward-thinking vision, SPS offers a diverse array of programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in today's dynamic world. Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies is committed to providing diverse, innovative programs to enable students to succeed in their educational and professional development.
A History of Growth and Innovation
The genesis of SPS can be traced back to a period of significant expansion in program offerings focused on graduate preparation and career advancement. Over the next five years the school expanded to offer programs focused in graduate preparation and career advancement. This period of growth culminated in a pivotal moment in 2002 when the university's board of trustees granted final approval for the creation of the School of Continuing Education, the first new school at Columbia in 50 years. This marked a significant milestone, solidifying the school's position within the university structure.
With this new status, the School became both a Faculty and a Department of Instruction in the Arts and Sciences, and was granted authority to offer the Master of Science degree. The school rapidly expanded its graduate offerings, growing to eight M.S. Programs in the course of 2002-2006. Further demonstrating its commitment to collaboration, a cross‑enrollment agreement with Union Theological Seminary was also established in 2002.
In recognition of its evolving role and expanded scope, the School of Continuing Education was later renamed the School of Professional Studies, reflecting its focus on providing career-oriented and professionally relevant education.

A Commitment to Innovation and Real-World Impact
At Columbia University School of Professional Studies, we are innovators, we are scholars, and we are thought leaders, upholding Columbia’s long-standing tradition of excellence. SPS is dedicated to providing innovative and relevant programs that prepare students for success in their chosen fields. Our interdisciplinary programs advance knowledge with purpose, preparing students for careers with real-world impact as they progress along the continuum, from high school, to graduate degrees, to lifelong learning.
The school embraces cutting-edge approaches and modalities to build best-in-class learning experiences across a diverse range of instructional environments. SPS's commitment to real-world impact is evident in the research and projects undertaken by its students. For example, M.S. in Applied Analytics student M. Rake Lingor Anggoro's research uses AI to quickly surface best practices, emerging trends, and proven methodologies in agriculture. But his work could have implications far beyond that one industry. This summer, 13 students in Columbia University’s M.S. in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution program completed their capstone projects, exploring conflict dynamics from labor negotiations and corporate disputes to cartel violence and AI ethics. Even for a seasoned executive like Nicole Haenel, the M.S. in Technology Management program offered important lessons that helped her gain an edge in the industry and be a more successful leader. Lecturer and alum Jessica Malloy's Business Anthropology course embodies a hallmark of the IKNS program: a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented curriculum that asks the deeper “why” behind human behavior.
A Global Community
Our roots are in the community of Columbia’s campus, but our reach is far wider - throughout New York City and through our extensive presence around the world. With engaged alumni, students, and faculty, we are building a global community of innovation, learning and leadership to prepare professionals for the future of work. Studying at Columbia means living and learning in New York City: a cornucopia of art, culture, sports, food, and fun.
