A History of Stetson University Division I Soccer

From its humble beginnings in 1894 with an intramural football game, athletics have been deeply embedded in the history of Stetson University. The moniker "Hatters" is a fitting tribute to John B. Stetson, the renowned creator of Stetson hats, reflecting the university's connection to this iconic figure. In addition to hosting the first football game in Florida, the Hatters played the state’s first intercollegiate baseball game in 1895 and the first intercollegiate basketball game in 1900, solidifying their place as "Florida’s First Private University." The Hatters later distinguished themselves as the first college basketball team in Florida to achieve 1000 victories. In 2012, Stetson was among the pioneering programs in collegiate beach volleyball, and in 2016, they participated in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship.

The Stetson Hatters consist of 19 varsity teams (8 men's and 10 women's) representing Stetson University in intercollegiate athletics. The Hatters compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are primary members of the Atlantic Sun Conference for most sports. The football program competes in the Pioneer Football League, men's rowing in the FIRA, and women's rowing in the MAAC.
