Navigating Health and Wellness: A Guide to Columbia University Student Health Services

Columbia University prioritizes the well-being of its students, understanding that good health is fundamental to academic achievement and personal growth. Columbia Health, the university's on-campus resource, provides a comprehensive range of health care programs and services designed to support students throughout their academic journey. This article will explore the various facets of Columbia Health, including insurance requirements, available services, and resources for navigating the healthcare system.

Understanding Columbia Health and Insurance Requirements

Columbia University mandates that all students have adequate health insurance coverage. This ensures that students have access to necessary medical care without facing undue financial burden. To meet this requirement, students have two options:

  • Enroll in the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan: This plan is specifically designed to meet the needs of Columbia students and provides comprehensive coverage.
  • Request a Waiver: Students who already have comparable health insurance coverage that meets the University's requirements can request a waiver. They must provide proof of their existing coverage and ensure it adheres to the University's standards.

The coverage provided by Columbia Health and a comparable insurance plan work together to meet your health care needs.

Open Enrollment Periods

New incoming Summer students may request enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan plan: May 1 through June 30, for coverage effective May 15 through August 14, 2025.

The Fall 2025 enrollment period for coverage from August 15, 2025 through August 14, 2026, will begin on July 15, 2025.

The Health Care Working Group (HCWG)

The health care working group (HCWG) is an open working group under Columbia University’s student-workers union, the Student Workers of Columbia (SWC-UAW 2110). We fight for high quality, accessible, and affordable health care for all student workers at Columbia University.

We’re a small band of student workers hailing from across the university and have been active since 2018. However, Columbia has not provided student workers with a quality health insurance plan and many workers have suffered as a result. Our goal as the HCWG is to hold Columbia accountable and ensure workers get the health coverage and health care they deserve.

Currently, we advocate for health care for all student workers by:

  • Creating channels and sharing information to help student workers navigate health care and Columbia health insurance (as well as helping students understand surprise bills and find in-network providers).
  • Documenting the health care experiences of students, especially during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Student Health History Form

Columbia Health expects all students to complete the Student Health History Form. It is completely confidential and becomes part of your medical record. The form should include any medical information that is pertinent to your ongoing care - particularly around current treatment and prescriptions, as well as your immunization records.

This form will only be visible for students with "Active" status in the Student Information System. The Health History will be reviewed by a Columbia Health professional, and based upon responses, students may receive information about on-campus resources to ensure a smooth transition to Columbia Health.
