Navigating Parking at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary: A Comprehensive Guide
For students attending Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, understanding the parking options available is crucial for a smooth and stress-free academic experience. This article provides a detailed overview of parking facilities, regulations, and alternative transportation options to help students make informed decisions about their commuting needs.
On-Campus Parking Overview
Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary is located in Evanston, sharing space with Northwestern University. Recognizing the importance of accessible parking, both the seminary and the university offer various solutions.
Garrett-Owned Parking
Garrett owns a small visitor's lot along Garrett Place, near the main entrance of the seminary. While primarily intended for visitors, Garrett students and employees are often permitted to park there on most days. Visitors can also call the seminary's front desk at 847.866.3900, as much as a week or two in advance, to make a reservation and inquire about space availability.
Northwestern University Parking
Northwestern University provides parking options for Garrett students through the purchase of parking passes. However, NU students are not permitted to buy passes for the lot next to the Garrett campus.
Visitor Parking
A yellow hangtag can be purchased (subject to availability) from the Garrett front desk or the NU parking office. This pass is valid for one day only and requires the date to be scratched off to avoid ticketing. Note that this pass is not valid for the large lot adjacent to the Garrett campus. Instead, it can be used in any of the NU visitor lots, the closest of which is located across Sheridan Road, north of the former Seabury campus and south of Noyes. Other NU lots are further away, approximately a 10-minute walk back to Garrett.

University-Wide Parking Initiatives
The main Northwestern University campus has more than 3,300 parking spaces. Additionally, there are 330 spaces at Engelhart Hall at Foster Street and Maple Avenue.
To address parking demands, the university has been actively exploring options to create more campus parking. For the past year, the parking planning advisory committee of faculty, staff, undergraduates, and graduate students has been reviewing options to create more campus parking.
To compensate for the loss, the university began construction in the fall of a parking lot behind the Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center. Originally scheduled to be completed by Jan. 1, the project is awaiting permits and should be completed this spring. The lot will have a total of 261 spaces open to students, faculty, and staff.
Future Parking Developments
Several proposals have been considered to expand parking capacity on the Northwestern University campus, which may indirectly benefit Garrett students:
Underground Garage at Allen Center and Pancoe Life Sciences Pavilion: One proposal suggests creating an underground garage between the Allen Center and the Pancoe Life Sciences Pavilion, providing approximately 400 spaces. This would be designated as a "destination lot," preventing general campus traffic from circulating through it.

Underground Garage at SPAC: Another proposal involves constructing a 400-space underground garage at the Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center (SPAC), with the potential for expansion to include 1,400 above-ground spaces.
Ryan Field Parking: The committee also explored the possibility of increasing the number of spaces at Ryan Field that are available to the NU community, potentially altering arrangements under which parts of the lot are leased to Evanston Hospital and the City of Evanston.
It should be noted that the construction of new lots could affect the cost of parking permits.
Alternative Transportation and Resources
Due to Garrett's compact campus and convenient access to public transportation, students may find that owning a car is not necessary.
Public Transportation
Chicago is easily accessible via a short "L" ride, providing a convenient alternative to driving.

Biking
The City of Evanston offers numerous bike trails, encouraging students to consider cycling as a mode of transportation. Students who bring bikes are encouraged to register them with the city.
