The Multifaceted Functions of a Student Services Building

Universities and colleges recognize that student success extends beyond the classroom. To that end, they provide a wealth of activities, programs, and services designed to support academic offerings and foster the holistic development of each student. Student services buildings are central hubs in this mission, contributing significantly to the cultural, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth of students. These buildings consolidate essential resources, creating a supportive and engaging campus environment.

Academic and Career Support

Many student services buildings house resources directly related to academic success. These include:

  • Academic Advising Centers: These centers provide guidance and support to students from admission through major selection. Faculty advisors assist with goal clarification, major selection, educational planning, and course selection. They also monitor student progress and connect students with other campus resources. For example, the Academic Advising Center at Nicholls State University provides these services.
  • Tutorial and Academic Enhancement Centers: These centers offer tutoring and academic support to students who need extra help with their coursework. The Tutorial Academic Enhancement Center at Nicholls State University provides small group tutoring in subjects like math, English, computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, and foreign languages.
  • Libraries: Modern libraries are more than just repositories of books. They offer access to vast digital resources, research assistance, and quiet study spaces. Ellender Memorial Library, for example, houses hundreds of thousands of books and periodicals, along with access to e-books and electronic reference sources.
  • Career Centers: Career centers offer comprehensive services to help students explore career options, prepare for job searches, and connect with employers. The Florida State University Career Center, for example, provides career advising, internship opportunities, and networking events.
  • Assessment Centers: These centers help students assess their skills and place them in appropriate courses. All Mt. SAC students are required to participate in assessment for course placement to ensure they have the opportunity to succeed in their coursework.

Financial Aid and Admissions

Navigating the financial aspects of college can be daunting. Student services buildings often house offices dedicated to helping students access financial aid and manage their educational expenses.

  • Financial Aid Offices: These offices provide information and assistance with applying for grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study opportunities. The Financial Aid Office at Mt. SAC helps students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other financial aid applications.
  • Admissions Offices: These offices are responsible for student recruitment and admissions programs. They guide prospective students through the application process and provide information about the university. Admissions and Records at Mt. SAC is usually the first office prospective students visit.

Student Life and Well-being

Student services buildings play a vital role in fostering a positive and supportive campus environment. They often house offices and resources dedicated to student life and well-being, such as:

  • Student Affairs Offices: These offices provide opportunities for student involvement, personal enrichment, and wellness services. They offer educational programs that help students achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals.
  • Counseling Centers: These centers provide counseling services and programs to help students with mental health, psychiatric, and developmental issues. They support co-curricular involvement, enhance civic engagement, and nurture appreciation of diversity. The Student Life Office at Mt.
