Student Success Agency: Empowering Students for a Brighter Future

The Student Success Agency (SSA) is dedicated to empowering students to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances. By providing consistent, caring relationships and comprehensive support services, SSA aims to bridge opportunity gaps and create pathways to success for all students.

The Need for Student Success Agencies

Many schools lack sufficient counselors and staff to adequately support all students' diverse needs. This is where Student Success Agents step in, offering crucial assistance beyond the traditional school day. They provide a safe and supportive environment for students to discuss social stresses, daily challenges, and post-secondary education (PSE) options. SSA offers consistent, caring relationships that safely contribute to and stabilize after-school environments. Conversations with Agents are always student-centered, creating a space for teens to ask for the support they need in their own words.

Comprehensive Support Services

SSA provides a range of services designed to address the holistic needs of students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional well-being. These services include:

  • 24/7 Access to Agents: Students can connect with agents anytime to receive guidance on social stressors, daily challenges, PSE planning, and more.
  • Mentorship Programs: SSA utilizes near-peer mentors who have undergone thorough screening through the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. The agency believed then that 1:1 mentorship would lead to all sorts of amazing outcomes.
  • Mindfulness-Based Sessions: SSA guides students through mindfulness exercises to manage stress, build resilience, and strengthen their social-emotional skills. These sessions include guided meditations and mindful journaling, empowering students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Post-Secondary Education Guidance: Agents provide advice and support on post-secondary options, helping students navigate the college application process and explore career paths.
  • Winbox App: SSA Speakers represent the agency in schools, inspiring and empowering students while connecting them to digital support services through the Winbox App.

Data-Driven Impact Assessment

To better understand its impact, SSA conducts thorough analyses of participant engagement and persistence in higher education. By combining data from participant contact records, detailing the type and duration of interaction between mentor and mentee, with post-secondary enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse, SSA can assess the effectiveness of its programs.

One project examined a convenience sample of 788 students who had shown an initial interest in engaging with SSA, graduated in 2017, and for whom SSA had information about the students’ postsecondary enrollment (PSE).
