Student Success Network Programs: A Comprehensive Guide
Navigating the complexities of higher education can be challenging, regardless of a student's background or academic strengths. Many institutions recognize this and have implemented various support systems to foster student success. Among these, Student Success Network (SSN) programs stand out as uniquely beneficial, offering peer-based learning and mentorship to facilitate a smooth transition and promote academic excellence. This article will explore the multifaceted nature of SSN programs, their importance, components, and how students can leverage them for optimal success.
The Importance of Student Success Networks
Medical school, like many other demanding academic programs, can be overwhelming. The Student Success Network (SSN) addresses this challenge head-on, fostering a sense of teamwork and efficient learning. It provides an approachable perspective to learning, as the program is composed of and run by students. This peer-to-peer approach allows for open communication and a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their concerns.
Regardless of individual talent and prior experience, medical school can at times be overwhelming for anyone.
Core Components of a Student Success Network
The Student Success Network (SSN) is a peer-based teaching program of dedicated upper-class students, providing learning strategies to facilitate the transition to medical school.
SSN programs typically encompass a range of resources and activities designed to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Key components often include:

Peer-to-Peer Support: SSNs leverage the experience and knowledge of upper-class students to guide and mentor their junior counterparts. This can involve formal mentoring programs, informal study groups, and peer tutoring.
Review Sessions: A cornerstone of many SSN programs is the organization of review sessions. These sessions, often facilitated by upper-class students, cover critical and challenging concepts relevant to upcoming exams.
Learning Strategy Development: SSNs often provide workshops and resources focused on enhancing learning strategies. These may cover topics such as time management, note-taking, test-taking skills, and effective study habits. The Accessibility and Learning Office offers workshops and one-on-one sessions to help you strengthen your learning strategies.
Resource Provision: SSNs may curate and disseminate valuable resources, such as study guides, practice questions, and textbook recommendations. These resources supplement lectures and provide students with diverse learning materials.
Community Building: SSNs foster a sense of community among students, creating opportunities for social interaction and networking. This can involve social events, group projects, and collaborative learning activities.

Benefits of Participating in a Student Success Network
Engaging with an SSN program offers numerous advantages for students:
Improved Academic Performance: By providing targeted support and resources, SSNs can help students improve their understanding of course material and enhance their exam performance.
Enhanced Learning Strategies: SSN programs equip students with effective learning strategies that can be applied across various disciplines and throughout their academic careers.
Increased Confidence: The supportive environment of an SSN can boost students' confidence in their abilities and reduce feelings of isolation or overwhelm.
Stronger Sense of Community: SSNs foster a sense of belonging and connection among students, creating a supportive network of peers and mentors.

Access to Valuable Resources: SSNs provide students with access to a wealth of resources, including study guides, practice questions, and textbook recommendations.
How to Maximize the Benefits of a Student Success Network
To fully leverage the benefits of an SSN program, students should:
Actively Participate: Attend review sessions, workshops, and social events to engage with the program and connect with other students. We encourage all first-year students to participate in our review sessions.
Seek Help When Needed: Don't hesitate to reach out to peer mentors or program coordinators for assistance with academic or personal challenges. I could use a little extra help.
Utilize Available Resources: Take advantage of the study guides, practice questions, and other resources provided by the SSN.
Contribute to the Community: Share your knowledge and experience with other students to foster a collaborative learning environment. Fundamental to our philosophy is putting into action the tenet of learning from (and thus teaching) your colleagues. It’s a fun way to learn.
Provide Feedback: Offer feedback to program organizers to help improve the SSN and ensure it meets the needs of its participants.
Examples of Student Success Network Activities
To illustrate the practical application of SSN principles, here are some examples of activities commonly implemented within these programs:
Small Group Review Sessions: These sessions, facilitated by upper-class students, provide a focused review of key concepts and offer opportunities for students to ask questions and clarify their understanding. Review sessions also expose students to varying strategies for organizing and studying information via upperclassmen. To supplement the sessions, we provide review sheets and practice questions highlighting the important points of each lecture. Most blocks will have two review sessions. Review sheets are uploaded to CourseWorks a few days before the review session.
Mentoring Programs: Pairing first-year students with experienced upper-class students to provide guidance, support, and advice on navigating the academic and social aspects of college life.
Workshops on Learning Strategies: Conducting workshops on topics such as time management, note-taking, and test-taking skills to equip students with effective learning strategies.
Study Groups: Facilitating the formation of study groups where students can collaborate on assignments, review material, and support each other's learning.
Social Events: Organizing social events to foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for students to connect outside of the classroom.
Addressing Diverse Student Needs
Student Success Networks are increasingly recognizing the importance of addressing the diverse needs of their student populations. This includes providing targeted support for students with disabilities, first-generation college students, and students from underrepresented backgrounds.
Students with Disabilities: The Student Accessibility Services Office ensures appropriate accommodations and support. I have ADHD.
First-Generation College Students: Navigating college as the first in your family to do so can present unique challenges. SSNs can provide guidance and support to help these students succeed. I’m the first in my family to go to college. Yes!
Students Requiring Foundational Support: Some students may benefit from developmental courses to solidify their foundational skills. Your placement score helps us identify the best starting point for your success. Some students may take a developmental course to strengthen foundational skills.
The Role of Technology in Student Success Networks
Technology plays an increasingly important role in facilitating and enhancing Student Success Networks. Online platforms, such as CourseWorks, provide a central hub for communication, resource sharing, and collaboration. CourseWorks is Columbia’s online course management system to coordinate files, calendars, and other information.
Online Resource Libraries: SSNs can curate and maintain online libraries of study guides, practice questions, and other resources that students can access anytime, anywhere.
Virtual Study Groups: Technology enables the formation of virtual study groups, allowing students to connect and collaborate remotely.
Online Mentoring Platforms: Online platforms can facilitate mentoring relationships by providing tools for communication, scheduling, and resource sharing.
Textbook Strategies and Resource Utilization
Textbooks are not required and are really a matter of learning style and preference. It's useful to experiment with them and with ways of using them to see if they are right for you. Since test questions are largely based on lecture slides and small groups, textbooks can function as a secondary resource for difficult material covered in lectures. Most students find it best to vary the way they learn course material by using Student Success Network study sheets, web resources, and-you guessed it-textbooks to help supplement lecture slides. But you won‘t want to purchase every recommended textbook. To help navigate this uncertainty, we surveyed the Class of 2014 about which resources, including textbooks, they found most useful. The results of this survey are uploaded in the Google Drive folder. The Center for Education Research and Evaluation surveyed the Class of 2015 and their results are in the drive folder as well. You will be notified if this information is further updated.
