Study abroad students can expect to gain a whole new perspective when they study overseas. Immersing yourself in a country with a new foreign language provides immeasurable personal growth. Some study abroad programs are directly tied to specific fields of study or college courses. Most colleges partner with other colleges and universities to offer these once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunities. Sometimes referred to as partnership programs, most university-affiliated study abroad programs have been vetted by college administrators. These college-approved study abroad courses ensure credit can be for the course and that students are studying in a safe location.
Finding the Right Scholarships
Connect with an academic advisor from your home university or professors in your major to let them know you are interested in traveling and studying as a student! Many scholarships can alleviate the financial strain. Here's a breakdown of some notable scholarships and their requirements.
General Scholarship Opportunities

Specific Study Abroad Scholarships
The Korea Section Student Award: This award is available to students pursuing a Ph.D. at a Korean University.
The STEMing Abroad Travel Scholarship: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students in the United States who are currently enrolled in a community college or a four-year university pursuing a STEM degree and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. To be eligible for this award, you must have been accepted into a study abroad program offered through your academic institution.
The CAPA Academic Excellence Scholarship: This scholarship is available to currently enrolled students who are planning to study abroad. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 to be eligible for this award.
James K. Rathmell Jr. Memorial Scholarship: The James K. Rathmell Jr. Memorial Scholarship is available to juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
The Learning Beyond Borders Scholarship: This scholarship is open to rising college sophomores who are planning on and have been accepted into a study abroad program either this coming semester or the following semester to be considered for this award. A personal statement in either video or essay format must also be submitted.

The Schwarzman Scholars Program: This program is open to graduate students and provides a fully funded one-year master's degree program in global studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The Going Abroad Scholarship: This scholarship is available to full-time students who are planning to study abroad.
The Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship: This scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate students who must have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university to be eligible for this award.
The Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholarship: This scholarship is available to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students who are pursuing a career in international journalism. You must submit a cover letter, a resume, and a work sample to be considered for this award.
The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship: This fellowship is available to seniors graduating from a participating college or university who wish to pursue one year of independent international study. To be considered for this award, you must submit a proposal for a project that is creative, feasible, and personally significant. You must also submit a personal statement, a letter of nomination from your college or university, and at least one letter of recommendation. Participation in an interview is also required.
The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) Need-Based Financial Aid Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students at institutions that are members or associate members of the IES college consortium. You must be accepted into an IES study abroad program to be eligible for this award. You also must currently be receiving financial aid at your home school, and the home school must have a policy of transferring at least 75 percent of home school aid to IES.
The SIT Fund Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students enrolled in a School for International Training study abroad program.
The Diversity Abroad IES Diversity Scholarship: This scholarship is available to under-represented undergraduate students who have been accepted to participate in a study abroad, intern abroad, language immersion abroad, or volunteer abroad program offered through a DiversityAbroad.com partner organization. Under-represented students include students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation to college students, students from low-income families, and students with a history of overcoming adversity.
AIFS Abroad Scholarships and Grants
AIFS Abroad recognizes the challenges that today’s students face with meeting the cost of their education. They believe that a study abroad and/or intern abroad experience is an essential component of well-rounded education and are committed to providing financial assistance to as many students as possible in support of their goal to study abroad.
Competitive Scholarships: These scholarships require an application and may include an essay about a particular topic. A specific number of awards are made each term, and the selection process is competitive. Award amounts vary.
Limited Grants: These are $1,000 awards with a fixed funding amount each year. A select number of participants are awarded each term. Grants are stackable: Participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester or quarter study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Spring Break and virtual programs are not eligible.
Paired Grants: These grants are for eligible participants enrolled at AIFS Abroad partner institutions as part of the application process. Applicants do not need to complete a separate scholarship application for this funding type. Grants are stackable: participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester or quarter study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Spring Break and virtual programs are not eligible. As an applicant, you will know before you apply which grants you are eligible to receive.
