Trine University: A Legacy of Notable Alumni and Transformation
Trine University, a private institution with campuses in Angola and Fort Wayne, Indiana, and education centers in Detroit, Phoenix, and Reston, Virginia, boasts a rich history and a growing reputation. Established in 1884 as Tri-State Normal College, the university has undergone significant transformations, including name changes and expansions, to become the nationally competitive institution it is today. This article explores Trine University's evolution, its academic programs, and some of its most notable alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields.
From Tri-State to Trine: A History of Growth and Adaptation
Originally named Tri-State Normal College, the institution served the tri-state area of Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, providing flexible evening and weekend courses for teachers and engineers. Over the years, the college broadened its scope, evolving into Tri-State College in 1906 and Tri-State University in 1975.
In 2008, a pivotal moment arrived when the university was renamed Trine University, honoring alumni and significant donors Ralph and Sheri Trine. This change reflected a strategic decision to position the university as a nationally recognized private institution, distinguishing it from state-funded schools and other organizations using the "tri-state" moniker.
Accreditation and Campus Expansion
Trine University has maintained continuous accreditation since June 1, 1963, with its Level V accreditation recently extended until the 2026 evaluation. The Angola campus has seen substantial growth since 2000, with over $176 million invested in building projects. These additions include multiple residential facilities and the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts.
Academic Programs and Student Life
Trine University offers a diverse range of academic programs, including associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in more than 50 fields of study. The university maintains a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring personalized attention for its students. Trine University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Individual Stories of Success
Several alumni have achieved remarkable success, embodying the spirit of Trine University.
- Ralph Trine: Of Vestil Manufacturing, after whom the university is named.
- John J. McKetta Jr.: Advisor of four US Presidents on environment and energy.
- Ralph Ketner: Founder of the grocery chain Food Lion.
- Ty Hoover: (Trine University, â22) Enrolled at Trine University, energetic and excited to get involved on campus. He joined the track team and began meeting brothers from the Fraternity who also ran.
The Impact of Mentorship: Ty Hoover's Story
Ty Hoover's journey from a college student to a military serviceman and back to academia, culminating in his role as a track and field coach, highlights the profound impact of mentorship. He initially joined the track team and connected with members of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, which led him to a period of self-discovery. He withdrew from college to join the Air Force, where he worked in aerospace medicine and later transitioned to other roles.
While in the Air Force, he returned to college full-time and reconnected with his fraternity brothers, who encouraged him to pursue his goals. His coach, Seth Ware (Trine University, â13), who also serves on the Fraternity's Board of Trustees, became a mentor, guiding him in his coaching aspirations. Seth helped Ty apply for jobs, prepare for interviews, and build his confidence.
Ty is now the head track and field coach at Adrian College, where he shares his knowledge and leadership skills with his students. He credits the fraternity and Seth's mentorship for shaping him into the person and coach he is today.
