Understanding UAA Graduate Tuition Per Credit

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is committed to offering accessible and affordable education. As a comprehensive, open-access, public institution, UAA provides a wide range of educational opportunities, from short-term workforce credentials to graduate programs. UAA places an emphasis on affordability, inviting students to define their journey, create their community, and prepare to make an impact in Alaska and beyond. This article provides a detailed overview of UAA graduate tuition per credit, associated fees, and various opportunities for reduced tuition.

Standard Graduate Tuition

The current resident-graduate tuition rate is assigned per credit hour. However, tuition costs can vary depending on the specific program. For professional development course numbers (500-599), tuition costs vary. Contact the department or refer to specific course listings on UAOnline for detailed information.

Important Considerations:

  • Rates Subject to Change: All tuition rates are subject to change according to University Policy.
  • International Students: International students should consult International Student Services for comprehensive information regarding admission and enrollment at UAA.

Residency and Non-Residency

For tuition assessment, a resident is defined as a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen who meets specific criteria:

  1. Is physically present in Alaska at the end of the add/drop period for regular semester-length courses with the intent to remain in the state indefinitely.
  2. Has maintained domicile in Alaska for at least 12 consecutive months preceding the end of the drop/add date.
  3. Is not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another state, territory, or country.

"Eligible non-citizen" has the same meaning as used in determining eligibility for federal student financial aid.

Application for Resident Tuition:

Students applying for resident tuition assessment must file an application with the appropriate university admissions office before the published end of the add/drop period for regular semester-length courses. Failure to file and provide adequate proof of physical presence by this date will waive any claim for resident tuition eligibility for that semester or prior semesters, unless otherwise determined by the university chancellor or designee.

Non-Resident Tuition:

Nonresident students are assessed non-resident tuition on all academic credits, including self-support credits, except for A500-A599 level credits. During the 2019-2020 academic year, part-time graduate students from out-of-state paid an average of $1,079 per credit hour.

Reduced Tuition Opportunities

UAA offers several programs and initiatives to reduce tuition costs:

  • Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP): UAA participates in the WUE program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Through WUE, certain non-resident students may enroll in designated UAA programs at a reduced tuition rate.
    • Undergraduate students in the WUE program pay 150% of the in-state tuition rate.
    • Graduate students in the Western Region Graduate Program (WRGP) pay the in-state tuition rate on all graduate degree programs, both master's and doctoral.
    • Information about WUE programs at UAA may be obtained from Enrollment Services.
  • Senior Citizen Tuition Waivers: Regular tuition is waived for Alaska residents age 65 or older who register on a space-available basis, in accordance with Board of Regents Policy R05.10.080.B.
    • Senior Citizen Tuition Waivers waive regular tuition only.
    • Waivers must be submitted before or with fee payment by campus payment deadlines to avoid late fees.
    • To access registration, students must be admitted to UAA as either degree-seeking or non-degree seeking.
    • Submit the online Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Form electronically with a digital signature using the secure Single Sign-On (SSO) form.
  • Military Benefits: Reduced tuition is available for:
    • Active duty members of the United States Military.
    • Spouses and dependents of active duty military members.
    • Members of the National Guard and Reservists.
    • Spouses and dependents of National Guard and Reservists.
    • United States Veterans eligible for Veterans Administration education benefits.
    • Spouses and dependents of eligible veterans.
  • Alaska High School Graduates: Students who graduated within the past 12 months from a qualified Alaska high school may be eligible for reduced tuition.
  • National Student Exchange Program: Tuition and fees for incoming and outgoing participants in the National Student Exchange Program are charged according to the program's terms and conditions.
  • University of Alaska College Savings Plan: Participants of the University of Alaska College Savings Plan, the John Hancock Freedom 529, and the T. Rowe Price College Savings Plan may be eligible for reduced tuition.
  • Live and Learn in Alaska Initiative: Students with a non-resident or international Residency Code who live on campus will receive the equivalent of in-state tuition rates for courses taught through UAA's Anchorage campus.

Additional Fees

In addition to tuition, students may be required to pay several fees:

  • Consolidated Student Fee: A mandatory fee of \$42.75 per credit for the 2025-2026 academic year. This fee supports student-centered services and programs that promote academic and social integration into the UAA community, engage students in active learning, and foster student growth and development. Services include:

    • Recreational use of fitness facilities in the Avis Alaska Sports Complex.
    • Reduced ticket prices to musicians and comedians.
    • Free office visits at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
    • Opportunities to participate in and be represented by student government.
    • Free or reduced admission to athletic events.
    • Use of ePortfolio software.
    • Sustainability initiatives.
    • Student radio station KRUA 88.1 FM.
    • The Northern Light student newspaper.
    • Call Team safety escorts.
    • Seawolf shuttle service.
    • U-Pass municipal bus programs.
  • UA Infrastructure Fee: A mandatory fee of \$19 per credit for the 2025-2026 academic year, assessed to all students at all University of Alaska campuses. This fee addresses capital investment for university facilities and infrastructure, including academic equipment, capital refresh, and support. It covers rising costs in the maintenance and enhancement of university-wide technology infrastructure, supporting physical and virtual operations, maintenance, and construction that modernize university facilities, student living and learning spaces, and technology systems that enhance the university-wide academic experience. A portion of the revenue remains at the university, and a portion goes to the UA system for the operation of common networks. For courses offered through UAA’s Anchorage campus, this fee will appear as “UAA Infrastructure Fee” on the student bill.
