Decoding UC Berkeley Transfer GPA Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide
Gaining admission to the University of California, Berkeley, as a transfer student is a goal for many. While academic excellence, as demonstrated by GPA, is a significant factor, UC Berkeley employs a holistic review process. This guide provides a detailed overview of UC Berkeley's transfer GPA requirements, contextualizing them within the broader admissions landscape.
Understanding the Holistic Review Process
UC Berkeley's admission process goes beyond simply evaluating academic indicators. The university seeks students with persistence, passion, and a desire to contribute to the community. While grades and coursework are important, the admissions committee reads each application individually, looking for students who will enrich the educational environment at Berkeley. The university recognizes a wide range of talent and creativity, not always reflected in traditional academic measures, which can positively indicate a student's ability to succeed at Berkeley.
All achievements, both academic and nonacademic, are considered in light of the opportunities available to the applicant. The admissions committee assesses how fully the applicant has taken advantage of those opportunities. For applicants who have faced hardships or unusual circumstances, readers consider the maturity, determination, and insight displayed in overcoming these challenges. Likely contributions to the intellectual and cultural vitality of the campus are also evaluated.
Minimum GPA Requirements for Transfer Admission
To be considered for transfer admission to UC Berkeley, students must meet certain minimum academic standards. These are the bare minimums; successful applicants often exceed these requirements. The minimum requirements for Berkeley transfer admissions are listed below. It is important to note that transfer admission requirements will vary by college and major, however there are a number of requirements that are common across all colleges. UC's minimum transfer admission requirements represent the minimum academic standards students must attain to be considered for admission.
- Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit.
- Achieve a GPA of at least 2.4 (2.8 for nonresidents).
GPA Benchmarks and the Importance of Context
It is crucial to understand that the GPA figures provided by UC Berkeley are snapshots of the incoming class and should not be interpreted as strict benchmarks. Admission to Berkeley goes beyond academic indicators. The numbers below are presented as a snapshot of our incoming class of Golden Bears. These are not benchmarks and should only be used as a reference.

The 25th to 75th percentile range indicates the GPA range for the middle half of admitted students. For example, if the GPAs were sorted from low to high, the median would be the one in the middle. The 25th to 75th percentile (pct) indicate the range of GPAs for the middle half of the admits. In other words, 25 percent of the admits have a GPA lower than the 25th percentile figure, and 25 percent of the admits have a GPA higher than the 75th percentile figure.
Transfer Acceptance Rates and Application Statistics
Acceptance rates for transfers at UC Berkeley are roughly double those of the regular round. It is important to look at historical data to get the complete picture of how difficult it is to transfer into any school. For entry in the fall of 2024, 5,454 students were accepted, and 21,496 applied.
Coursework and Transferable Units
To meet the unit requirements, it is essential to understand what coursework is transferable to UC Berkeley.
If the student is transferring from a college/university accredited by one of the seven former regional accrediting agencies, units or credits are generally transferable if a course is comparable to one offered at any UC campus. If you cannot find a comparable course at UC Berkeley, look in the catalogs of other UC campuses. The school must be officially recognized in order for us to accept any credit. Determine if your subjects are similar to any subjects offered at UC Berkeley using descriptions in the UC Berkeley Course Guide. Remedial academic subjects, such as English taught as a second language and high school level math, are not transferable. Whether or not you believe your coursework will be transferable, you will be required to report ALL post-secondary coursework undertaken in your application.
All courses completed and grades and units earned at a UC campus during fall, winter, spring and summer terms are transferable to another UC campus (however, some UC Extension courses may not be transferable).

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exam credit
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams can be used to benefit students in two ways. Exams with scores of 3 or higher on AP exams, or 5 or higher on IB higher-level exams can be used for unit credit. Units from credit-bearing exams can help students meet the unit minimum requirement, but will not be counted toward the unit maximum admission policy. Students can also use AP and IB exams for general education and/or subject credit and are encouraged to review ASSIST.org or the UC Berkeley Catalog for more details. For more information on how AP credits can be used, review the UC Exam Credit Matrix.
Important Considerations for Specific Applicant Groups
- Applicants with coursework from four-year institutions: Students who have completed UC-transferable coursework at any four-year institution at any point in time may be ineligible for admission if they exceed the unit maximum policy for admission. Please note that students with all coursework completed at a 2 year institution will never exceed the unit maximum admission policy. To determine if you have exceeded the unit maximum for admission you must first understand and apply the UC lower-division maximum transfer credit limitation policy. After applying the UC lower-division maximum transfer credit limitation policy, all junior/senior (upper division) and all UC units (lower division and upper division) are added to that total unit count.
- International students: International students have the same transfer admission requirements as all other students.
- Students previously enrolled at a UC campus: Students who were previously enrolled at a UC campus in a regular academic term (fall, winter and/or spring) and who would like to return to the same UC campus after an absence of one year or more must contact the Registrar’s Office for specific procedures on how to re-enroll. Students who were previously enrolled at a UC campus and want to transfer to a different UC campus must be in good academic standing (last term and/or cumulative UC GPA of 2.00 or above) at their prior UC campus to be considered for transfer admission, even if that UC campus is not their last school of attendance. Some campuses may consider a small number of transfer students who already have senior standing. These students are expected to fulfill the same minimum requirements as junior level transfers.
- Transfer Academic Update (TAU): By January 31, all applicants will need to complete a Transfer Academic Update (TAU) that provides their fall grades and planned spring coursework.
Beyond GPA: The Importance of Personal Qualities and Experiences
UC Berkeley seeks well-rounded individuals who demonstrate specific qualities and experiences. The application includes prompts designed to reveal these attributes. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge.
Additional Requirements and Recommendations
Along with satisfying our admission requirements, transfer students - like all UC students - must fulfill additional requirements before graduating. Some, such as the American history and institutions requirement and the entry-level writing requirement, are UC-wide. We recommend thoroughly reviewing the UC Berkeley Transfer Admission Guide.
NOTE: Effective for the fall 2025 application cycle, Berkeley will no longer require IGETC/Cal-GETC, Essential Skills, or UC Reciprocity for eligibility for students applying to the College of Letters and Science and the College of Computing, Data Science and Society. Students will have to complete University of California 7-course pattern to satisfy eligibility requirements for admission. Learn about transfer admissions information by college.
