Fees for Self-Supporting Degree Programs

The fees mentioned above exclude students enrolled in self-supporting degree programs. Students enrolled in self-supporting degree programs pay a program fee in lieu of the fees above.

Cost of Attendance (COA)

Cost of Attendance is an estimated budget that the school uses to help students maximize financial aid opportunities. This budget is estimated using direct and indirect costs that a student will incur while enrolled in an academic program.

Direct Costs

Direct Costs are charges included in the cost of attendance that the student/family pays directly to the college. Actual charges may vary by student. For example, students may have different housing options or may enroll in a part-time program. These items include Tuition and Fees, Health Insurance, and Nonresident Supplemental Tuition (for California nonresidents).

Indirect Costs

Indirect Costs are estimated expenses in the cost of attendance that are not paid directly to the institution.

Graduate Fees and Remissions

At UC Davis, students with employment of 25% or more, much of the tuition and fees are automatically paid for in remissions as a benefit of being either a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR), Teaching Assistant (TA) or Associate Instructor (AI). This includes domestic tuition and health insurance (SHIP). International or non-CA resident MS students must also pay Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition. PhD students are offered a fellowship to cover this fee for five years.

Overall Cost Considerations

The figures provided include both tuition and fees, also referred to as the sticker price. Fees differ by institution and may fund library services, student gym facilities, student centers, technology resources and campus health centers. The overall cost of attending graduate school at UC Davis includes more than just tuition and fees. Any prospective graduate student should consider other costs, such as housing, books, supplies, health care, and other personal and living expenses.

Estimated Total Costs

At University of California, Davis, the total cost is $39,583 for in-state students and $71,471 for out-of-state students.

Additional Expenses

The University of California’s Graduate and Professional Student Cost of Attendance Survey suggests that academic graduate students spend an average of $300-350 on books, fees, and educational supplies annually. The UC’s Graduate and Professional Student Cost of Attendance Survey suggests that, on average, UC Davis students also spend $760 a month on groceries, snacks, and meals and $390 on utilities, phone, and other personal expenses.

Housing

Graduate students at UC Davis may choose to live on- or off-campus, with the majority preferring off-campus housing. The City of Davis has a variety of housing options and many students find living off-campus with roommates to be the most affordable option.
