UCLA Bruins: A Legacy of Athletic Excellence

The UCLA Bruins represent the University of California, Los Angeles, in the realm of collegiate athletics. As participants in NCAA Division I, the Bruin men's and women's teams showcase their talents within the Big Ten Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). In football, they compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of Division I.

Early Years and Conference Affiliations

Upon its founding, UCLA became a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The landscape of collegiate athletics shifted following "pay-for-play" scandals at California, USC, UCLA, and Washington, leading to the disbandment of the PCC in June 1959. A new era began on July 1, 1959, with the launch of the Athletic Association of Western Universities, featuring California, UCLA, USC, and Washington as its charter members. Over time, the conference evolved, renaming itself the Pacific-8 Conference in 1968, then the Pacific-10 Conference in 1978, and finally the Pac-12 in 2011.

From Cubs to Bruins: The Evolution of a Mascot

In 1919, when UCLA was established as the Southern Branch of the University of California, the football team was initially known as the "Cubs," reflecting its subordinate relationship to the California Bears in Berkeley. In 1923, the team embraced the "Grizzlies" moniker. The use of live bears as mascots began in the 1930s, with animals being rented for UCLA home football games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. While the practice waned, students and alumni introduced "Little Joe Bruin" in the 1950s. "Little Joe," a Himalayan bear cub from India, eventually grew too large and was transferred to a circus. In 1961, alumni purchased "Josephine," who resided in the backyard of the Rally Committee chairman.

Colors and Uniforms

In the early days, UCLA shared the same colors as the University of California, Berkeley: Yale Blue and gold. However, in 1949, football coach Red Sanders redesigned the football uniforms, opting for a lighter shade of blue, believing it would appear more appealing on the field and in film.
