Navigating UIUC Freshman Housing: A Comprehensive Guide
Choosing where to live during your freshman year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a significant decision that impacts your overall college experience. UIUC offers a diverse range of housing options, from traditional residence halls to private certified housing and Greek life. Understanding these options is crucial for making the right choice. This article will guide you through the various undergraduate residence halls, living-learning communities, and other housing possibilities available to incoming freshmen.
Understanding the Basics of UIUC Housing
First-time attending students are required to live in university-approved housing, ensuring a safe and supportive environment. With approximately 40 options, navigating the selection process might seem daunting. The university offers 24 undergraduate residence halls grouped into four main areas: Urbana North, Urbana South, Ike North, and Ike South.
The selection process involves submitting a housing contract before the priority deadline. Time slots to select your hall are randomized for everyone who submits their housing contracts before the priority deadline. If you do not submit by the priority deadline, you will be assigned a space. Missing this deadline may limit your choices, so it’s essential to be prepared with a list of preferred halls. Even if you don't get one of your top choices this year, don't fret: You'll be near the front of the line to choose next year! It’s a big decision, but you can’t go wrong.
Exploring the Four Main Housing Areas
Each of the four main housing areas-Urbana North, Urbana South, Ike North, and Ike South-offers distinct advantages and a unique living experience. Understanding the characteristics of each area can help you narrow down your options.
Urbana North
Urbana North is known for its proximity to academic resources and recreational facilities. Key features include:

- LAR (Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls) and Allen Hall: These halls are connected and share an all-you-care-to-eat dining hall in the basement as well as LAR’s Field of Greens - a vegan/vegetarian dining hall.
- CRCE (Campus Recreation Center East): Living in Urbana North provides quick and easy access to CRCE - the Campus Recreation Center East.
- Busey-Evans: A short walk to both the LAR and ISR dining halls, and is a smaller, stand-alone hall with a great community. Busey is an all-female hall with a non-visitation wing, and Evans is an all-male hall.
- Allen Hall (Unit One): For those who are musically inclined or artsy, Allen Hall is our creative living-learning community!
Urbana South
Urbana South offers a blend of convenience and community, with easy access to dining and recreational options.
- PAR and FAR (Pennsylvania Avenue and Florida Avenue Residence Halls): These halls are home to six residence halls that are all a short distance away from each other. A benefit of PAR and FAR is the easy access to the PAR dining hall. Our newest retail location, Corner Café offers a cozy, inviting space inside FAR to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and a bite to eat. There is also a dining retail location in PAR, a fitness room in FAR and various classes and activities within the halls - and outside of them! There are tennis and basketball courts as well as Illini Grove, one of the most peaceful nature spots on campus, right outside.
Ike North and Ike South (Ikenberry Commons)
Ikenberry Commons is our most populated area with 11 residence halls! It has everything a resident could need and is arguably the most social of residence hall areas. It also has its own open green space - the Ike Quad! You are a short walk away from the Ike Dining Center, which is in the SDRP (Student Dining and Residential Programs Building). The SDRP has everything - dining, study lounges, fun events and more - including The Caffeinator and 57 North retail locations.
Living-Learning Communities (LLCs)
Living in an LLC connects you to like-minded individuals with similar interests, who can help you progress in your career and Illinois experience. There are 10 LLCs, or living-learning communities, throughout the residence halls. There is a Business LLC, the Sustainability LLC, Women in Math, Science and Engineering LLC and more.
Private Certified Housing (PCH)
Illinois also offers housing to students in Private Certified Housing (PCH) Residence Halls. PCH units are privately owned and operated, and are certified by the University for first-year students as well as upperclassmen. These facilities offer a different experience from that of the traditional residence hall. You'll find everything from air conditioning and semi-private bathrooms to in-room kitchens and fitness centers.
Greek Life Housing
Many fraternity and sorority houses are also private certified, but housing is usually tied to membership, and most incoming first-year students are not yet members. Of the 87 chapters on campus, close to 50 offer housing. Each facility is privately owned and operated, with rates comparable to other living options.
