Celebrating Undergraduate Research: A Showcase of Innovation and Discovery

Undergraduate research symposia and celebrations provide invaluable platforms for students to present their work, engage with the academic community, and hone their scholarly skills. These events, held across various universities and colleges, highlight the diverse research endeavors of undergraduates across all disciplines. This article delves into the essence of such celebrations, with a focus on the Celebration of Undergraduate Research at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Significance of Undergraduate Research Celebrations

Undergraduate research celebrations serve several crucial purposes:

  • Showcasing Student Work: These events provide a dedicated space for undergraduate students to present their research findings, creative projects, and scholarly work to a wider audience.
  • Encouraging Research Engagement: By celebrating undergraduate research, universities aim to encourage more students to participate in research opportunities and explore their academic interests beyond the classroom.
  • Developing Scholarly Skills: Presenting research at a symposium allows students to develop essential skills such as public speaking, poster design, and the ability to articulate complex ideas in an accessible manner.
  • Fostering a Research Culture: These celebrations contribute to a vibrant research culture on campus, where students, faculty, and staff come together to learn from each other and appreciate the value of undergraduate research.
  • Affirming Environment: Creating a supportive and encouraging environment is vital for students to share their work and receive constructive feedback.

Examples of Undergraduate Research Celebrations Across Universities

Many universities and colleges host annual events to celebrate undergraduate research. These events take various forms, including:

  • URSCA Conference (UC Davis): Each year, UC Davis undergraduates in all academic fields are invited to participate in the URSCA Conference. Research projects must be conducted under the supervision of a faculty member or professional at UC Davis. The conference is designed to acquaint undergraduate students with the process and academic rigors of presenting research in a scholarly manner and in an affirming environment. Attendance is free and open to the community. The 2026 URSCA Conference takes place April 24 and 25.
  • Undergraduate Research Symposium (K-State): The campus-wide spring Undergraduate Research Symposium is an opportunity for K-State students to present their research. The K-State and Manhattan community is encouraged to stop by the presentation sessions and explore the research topics of our undergraduate students. Refreshments will be made available for guests. Throughout the day there will be oral and poster presentations from 300 students showcasing their undergraduate research and creative inquiry projects. Students, faculty, and staff look forward to this day every year as we celebrate the accomplishments of our students.
  • Symposium of Student Scholars (Kennesaw State University): The Symposium of Student Scholars is designed to showcase student research and therefore accepts projects submitted by current undergraduate or graduate students at Kennesaw State University (KSU). This multi-day event will be held on April 22-24, 2026, and is open to the public.
  • Undergraduate Research Symposium (Penn State): Open to students from all Penn State campuses, this campus-wide event celebrates curiosity, mentorship, and the powerful ideas that emerge when learning extends beyond the classroom.
  • Symposium (UNC Asheville): The Symposium is UNC Asheville’s twice annual celebration of undergraduate scholarship. Students have the opportunity to present their research, music, films, and studio art in a day of oral presentations, performances, and a poster session. While the presenters must be UNC Asheville students, the event is open to the community. Come learn about the great scholarship UNC Asheville students have produced!
  • Schuylkill Experience Exchange Conference (Penn State Schuylkill): The Schuylkill Experience Exchange Conference Poster Session will provide our undergraduate students the opportunity to present their research findings and engage the community about their experiences.
  • LSU Discover Day (Louisiana State University): Undergraduate students from all universities and colleges are invited to apply to present their research or creative works at Louisiana State University’s annual undergraduate conference, LSU Discover Day, which will take place on Friday, April 17th, at our campus in Baton Rouge, LA. This one-day event gives students the opportunity to present their work through poster, oral, art, performance, or visual display presentations. Applications are now open and will close on Feb. 20th.
  • Discover USC (University of South Carolina): Discover USC showcases research, scholarship, leadership and creative projects by undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and medical scholars representing the entire USC system, from the Upstate to the Lowcountry. This annual event is proudly sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research.
  • Student Scholarship Expo (Bradley University): The Student Scholarship Expo is an annual celebration of the research, scholarship, and creative production of Bradley undergraduate and graduate students from across the disciplinary spectrum of our academic programs. Students present their projects, and share a short presentation about their work to a panel of volunteer judges from Bradley and the surrounding community. Awards are offered to the best presentations and the ceremony is open to the public.

The Celebration of Undergraduate Research at UNC-Chapel Hill

The Celebration of Undergraduate Research is a research symposium held at UNC-Chapel Hill at the end of each spring semester. The goal of the Celebration is to showcase and encourage meaningful UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate research in all disciplines. The format of the Celebration is poster sessions that showcase individual or group research projects. Undergraduates may share research conducted in a class, research done as part of an honors thesis, or results gathered through other faculty-mentored research experiences.

Eligibility and Registration

All currently enrolled UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students are eligible to register to present their research at the Celebration. All students interested in presenting their research at the Celebration must pre-register using the CUR 2026 Presenter Pre-registration form. All presenters are required to register by April 10, 2026, by 11:59 pm EST.

Abstract Submission

You are required to submit an abstract using the registration form. Please ensure that you upload the final version of your abstract before submitting the form. Also, please note that individual students can only submit one poster each for the Celebration. Students may, however, present an individual poster and also participate in a group poster, such as a poster crafted from a research and discovery course.

Poster Guidelines

All presenters are responsible for printing their own 48(W)” x 36″(H) inch posters. Your poster must be no larger than the dimensions listed above to fit on the support boards. We recommend that presenters register for a “Poster Design” workshop.

Group Presentations

For group presentations, only one (1) student needs to pre-register for the entire group and submit the group’s abstract to confirm registration.

Day-of Information for Presenters

All presenters should plan to arrive at Alumni Hall in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on April 22nd 15 mins before their poster session to check in and set up their poster. Although there is not an official dress code, we recommend business casual attire for presenters.
