Navigating Honors College Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide
For ambitious students seeking a more challenging and rewarding academic experience, Honors Colleges offer a unique path within the larger university setting. These programs provide opportunities for in-depth study, research, and personalized learning. This article explores the requirements and benefits of participating in an Honors College, drawing upon examples from various institutions to provide a comprehensive overview.
What is an Honors College?
Honors Colleges are designed to complement and enrich the undergraduate study of motivated and high-achieving students in all majors. They offer a more rigorous and stimulating academic environment, with smaller class sizes, dedicated faculty, and opportunities for independent research. Honors Carolina connects exceptional students who share a passion for learning with renowned faculty who love teaching. The program opens the door to everything one of the world’s top public research universities has to offer.
Admission Requirements
Admission to an Honors College is competitive and based on academic merit. Each academic department at UNC Greensboro has a faculty Honors Liaison who is knowledgeable about both his or her programs and International Honors. In order to participate in Honors and enroll in courses, students must be admitted into, and maintain good standing in, the Global Honors Program.
Typically, incoming first-year applicants must meet certain minimum criteria. For example, to be eligible to apply to The Honors College’s Global Honors Program, applicants might need to demonstrate at least one of the following:
- A minimum 1280 combined Math and Evidence Based Reading and Writing SAT score.
- A 26 composite ACT score.
- A 3.8 (weighted) high school GPA.
Some enrolling first-year students are invited to participate immediately in Honors Carolina. Other students may apply to the program at the beginning of their second semester or first year of study.

Applicants must complete the Honors College Admission application prior to accessing Honors College scholarship applications in the NinerScholars Portal. Materials submitted as part of a complete Honors College Admission application will be imported into the NinerScholars Portal to meet the same material requirements necessary for consideration for most Honors Scholarships. This process is in place to streamline the application process, and to eliminate the need for applicants to submit duplicative application materials multiple times. As a result, you will not be matched with Honors College scholarships in NinerScholars until you complete the Honors College Admission application. Imports will take place five times each day.
Curriculum and Coursework
Honors Colleges require students to complete a certain number of honors credit hours, often through a combination of dedicated honors courses, honors contracts, and independent research. To graduate with Distinction as a University Honors Scholar, students must complete a minimum of 21 hours of credit in Honors courses, which must include the Honors Capstone Course.
Most honors credits will be earned in Public Liberal Arts Core Experience (PLACE) courses, such as Honors First Year Seminar, Honors Humanities, and Honors Language 120. Students may also earn honors credits using honors contracts in upper-level courses, and students can request to count up to 8 hours of study abroad credits as honors credits.
Here's a breakdown of common coursework options:
- Honors Seminars: Interdisciplinary seminars focusing on a particular theme or topic and taught by two faculty members from different disciplines or schools.
- Honors Tutorials: Students (usually 4 or 5) meet with a faculty member to explore an agreed upon set of topics.
- Independent Research: Independent original scholarship, completed under the supervision of a faculty member. This often culminates in a senior honors thesis.
- Field Learning Experiences: Opportunities for hands-on learning in governmental or private organizations. For example, a Field learning experience in governmental or private organizations in Washington, DC.
- Research Fellows Colloquium: For Research Fellows Program.
The Disciplinary Honors Program allows students in all majors to do Honors work in their majors or in upper-division interdisciplinary studies. Through Disciplinary Honors, students have the opportunity to study topics in depth and to do advanced research under the supervision of a faculty member, thus giving themselves a competitive advantage when applying for graduate school or beginning a career. The requirements for the Disciplinary Honors Program vary by major.

Students who complete all the requirements for both the Global Honors Program and the Disciplinary Honors Program are recognized for completing Full University Honors. The Global Honors Program is designed to complement and enrich the undergraduate study of motivated and high achieving students in all majors.
Maintaining Good Standing
To remain in good standing in an Honors College, students must maintain a certain GPA and actively participate in program activities. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 in Honors coursework and an overall GPA of at least 3.25. Students must complete at least three hours of Honors credit every academic year. To remain in good standing with the Honors Program, students must meet the criteria listed above.
A student whose overall GPA falls below the thresholds will have one semester in which to raise the GPA to the minimum level. If, after one semester, the GPA remains below the thresholds, the student may request a waiver from the Director of the Honors Program to remain in the program. Ordinarily, students not meeting these requirements will have one semester after falling below the standards to comply. In special cases, the Director of the Honors Program will regularly assess the standing of students who make significant progress toward compliance.
Membership in the University Honors Program requires active engagement in all areas of our program.
Honors Contracts
An honors contract is an agreement between a student and a professor to add an honors component to a regular course. It involves additional work that is above and beyond the normal expectations of the course. When creating a contract course, be as specific as possible about the honors component which will be added to the course. Describe how the work will enhance the learning goals of the course and benefit the student academically, professionally and/or personally. The specific requirements for an honors contract are at the discretion of the individual instructor.

Honors Thesis/Capstone Project
Many Honors Colleges require students to complete a capstone project or senior honors thesis. This is a significant piece of independent research or creative work that demonstrates the student's mastery of their field. To graduate from the University with honors or highest honors, students must complete a senior thesis in their academic major. Senior honors thesis programs are offered in nearly 50 departments, curricula, and professional schools throughout the University.
At Maynor Honors College, students will work with a faculty member to research the project and plan the experience, culminating in a product and a formal presentation of the results. This process begins with HON 1500 (one credit hour) and concluding with HON 4500 (three credit hours).
For artistic endeavors, students will work with a faculty mentor to develop the project, resulting in an additional element of their course, or an extended artist statement, all under the direction of a faculty mentor.

Examples of Honors Program Structures
The University Honors Program (UHP) at some institutions requires students to fulfill 22 credit hours in honors coursework: 10 credit hours of core coursework and, in most cases, 12 elective credit hours: six in lower-division courses and six in upper-division courses. To stay on track with credit hour requirements, UHP students typically take an average of two honors classes each academic year.
The UHP offers different curriculum guides and example schedules based on the number of credit hours a student has upon entering the program:
- Coming into UHP with 0-29 credit hours
- Coming into UHP with 30-59 credit hours (Advanced Entry 1) - May be eligible to drop 1 lower-division elective honors course
- Coming into UHP with 60+ credit hours (Advanced Entry 2) - May be eligible to drop 2 lower-division elective honors course
These curriculum guides and example schedules outline a suggested sequence for a student in UHP.
