Practical Nursing Program at UTI

One of the flagship programs at UTI is its Practical Nursing (PN) program. Practical Nurses are essential to the healthcare profession and are vital links between physicians, registered nurses, other members of the healthcare continuum, and patients. They function as members of the healthcare team in planning, evaluating, and implementing nursing care and procedures. They engage in a multitude of tasks, including but not limited to, assisting patients learn appropriate self-care techniques. They observe, record, and report to supervisory personnel the general physical and mental condition of the patient, as well as signs and symptoms which may be indicative of adverse changes. The PN administers medications, provides wound, ostomy, and palliative care, among a wide variety of other meaningful procedures within their scope of practice.

Curriculum Overview

The Practical Nursing program at UTI is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level employment as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). The program integrates knowledge and skills to ensure graduates are well-prepared for their roles in healthcare settings.

Program Structure

Normal Completion Time: The day session typically takes twelve (12) months, while the evening session takes eighteen (18) months.
Class Size: Lecture class sizes are limited to thirty (30) students, maintaining a student/teacher ratio of 1:30.
NCLEX-PN Preparation: UTI utilizes ATI PN NCLEX preparation study modules to ensure adequate exposure to NCLEX-PN focused learning and current evidence-based practices. Students are required to complete these modules as part of their final course grades.

Course Descriptions

Medical Terminology: This course acquaints students with medical terminology used by healthcare organizations, building a vocabulary for nursing concepts.
Anatomy and Physiology I: Students gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of the human body, exploring the relationship between cells, tissues, and organs.
Anatomy and Physiology II: As a continuation of Anatomy and Physiology I, this course further integrates Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Nutrition: This course educates students about the value of good nutrition and its influence on health and wellness, including essential nutrients and the food pyramid.
Introduction to Practical Nursing: This course assists students in transitioning to the role of a professional practical nurse, covering legal and ethical issues, client-centered care, teamwork, evidence-based practice, and safety.
Communication: Students learn fundamental verbal and non-verbal therapeutic communication skills, including techniques for interviewing, effective communication, and teamwork.
Introduction to Nursing: This course introduces students to the theoretical and therapeutic aspects of nursing, emphasizing basic human needs across the lifespan according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Pharmacology: This course covers the study of drugs, their origin, nature, properties, and effects on living organisms, including classifications, categories, and regulations.
Medication Administration: Students learn the principles of medication administration, including calculations, conversions, and the safe administration of various medications.
Medical Surgical Nursing I: This course applies the nursing process to care for adult clients experiencing medical/surgical conditions, focusing on adaptation to limitations and interruptions in daily living.
Medical Surgical Nursing II: A continuation of Medical Surgical I, this course provides care to diverse populations of aging clients experiencing complex health alterations, emphasizing disease-specific interventions.
Maternal Newborn Nursing: Students are introduced to maternal/newborn nursing, studying biological, psychological, and sociological concepts applicable to the family, including childbearing and neonatal care.
Pediatric Nursing: This course focuses on the care of pediatric patients, exploring health-related conditions of children from infancy through adolescence, utilizing the nursing process.
Mental Health Nursing: Students gain an understanding of mental health and mental illness, learning the principles and theories of positive mental health and human behaviors.

Infrastructure Programs

HVACR Technician:

Experienced Instructors

Before joining Universal Technical Institute, all instructors are required to have a combination of field experience and training sufficient to meet accreditation standards and state regulations in the states in which the school is licensed or approved to operate. Due to their experience and training, UTI instructors are able to share information and insights with students that otherwise might take years to learn on the job. Universal Technical Institute updates its instructors through a variety of seminars and workshops that keep them abreast of new technology so they can pass that knowledge along to students. Instructors also continue their education and improve their teaching skills through training provided by the Center of Excellence in Education.

Universal Technical Institute Aviation maintenance instructors are required to hold an FAA mechanic certificate with one or more appropriate ratings (airframe/powerplant) or be a specifically qualified instructor. Our Wind Power instructors must follow the required GWO qualification processes, in addition to any applicable national legislation and regulations.

Universal Technical Institute’s Automotive, Diesel and Collision Repair & Refinish Technology instructors are ASE certified.
