University of Arkansas Grantham: A Comprehensive Overview

The University of Arkansas Grantham (UA Grantham), a public online university based in Little Rock, Arkansas, has a rich history rooted in providing accessible education. From its origins as a for-profit distance education provider to its current status as part of the University of Arkansas System, UA Grantham has continually evolved to meet the needs of its diverse student population.

Historical Development

Founded in 1951 as Grantham Radio License School, the institution initially focused on electronics education. In 1961, the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), formerly the Distance Education and Training Council, accredited the school, marking a significant milestone in its development. The Grantham School of Electronics (GSE) was renamed Grantham College of Engineering (GCE) in 1968, reflecting its expanding academic offerings.

The college established a second Los Angeles campus in 1974, and in subsequent years, GCE consolidated its operations in Los Angeles and focused exclusively on distance learning programs. In 1990, GCE relocated to Slidell, Louisiana, after obtaining approval to operate in the state.

The university faced a major challenge in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated its main campus in Slidell, destroying approximately eighty percent of its facilities. Despite this setback, the institution demonstrated resilience by relocating to Kansas City, Missouri, and quickly reestablishing its operations.

In a significant transition, Grantham University joined the University of Arkansas System on November 1, 2021, becoming the University of Arkansas Grantham. This move brought increased resources and recognition to the institution.
