University of Wisconsin Extension Programs: Extending Knowledge to the Community

The University of Wisconsin-Extension (UW-Extension) served as the outreach arm of the University of Wisconsin System, dedicated to providing statewide access to the university system's resources and research to Wisconsin residents of all ages. Fulfilling the promise of the Wisconsin Idea, UW-Extension extended the boundaries of the university to the boundaries of the state. Though the UW-Extension no longer exists in its original form, its legacy and impact continue through its divisions' integration into UW-Madison and the UW System. Historical Overview

The UW-Extension was initially created as a division of UW-Madison in 1907. In 1965, it took on a new form as an autonomous unit within the University of Wisconsin System. This restructuring aimed to enhance its ability to serve the diverse needs of Wisconsin communities.

In a significant shift, on November 9, 2017, the UW Board of Regents approved a proposal to split UW-Extension's divisions between UW-Madison and the University of Wisconsin System administration. This reorganization marked the end of UW-Extension as a distinct entity, but its functions and programs were absorbed into other parts of the UW System, ensuring the continuation of its mission.

Organizational Structure

Cooperative Extension

Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension (ANRE) is one of four program areas in Cooperative Extension. ANRE programs and educators help those in rural and urban communities use research and knowledge to solve problems and take advantage of new opportunities. The Cooperative Extension division focused on bringing university research and knowledge directly to communities through various programs and initiatives.

Continuing and Online Education

The Division of Continuing and Online Education offered credit, noncredit, professional development, and personal enrichment programs through the 26 UW System campuses and online courses and programs throughout the world. Business and Entrepreneurship

The Division of Business and Entrepreneurship was a UW-Extension business resource group organized as a collection of affiliated yet independent business support centers and initiatives.

Public Broadcasting

This division oversaw the state's public broadcasting services, providing educational and informational programming to a wide audience.

4-H is the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization; in Wisconsin, more than 150,000 youth in urban, suburban and rural settings are involved with 4-H and other UW-Extension youth programs.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

Extension’s Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources & Community Development creates a bridge between Wisconsin’s ag and the environmental resources with the people that use them. We help producers, farmers, and businesses build stronger and more diverse farm and food systems.

Community Development

Backed by University of Wisconsin research, our Community Development Educators work in partnership with people in county, state, federal and tribal governments, community organizations, volunteers, business and industry. We educate in leadership development, organizational development, food systems, community economic development, local government education and much more. Held at the historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, In Pursuit of Place Summit is a three-day, fully immersive experience with engaging sessions, tours, and opportunities to collaborate on the future of placemaking.

Family Resource Programs

Racine County is fortunate to have a variety of nonprofit and government agencies providing programs and services to individuals and families. In efforts to increase awareness of these resources, Extension publishes a Racine County Family Resource Directory each fall that can be found on Extension’s web site.

End-of-Life Planning

Planning AHEAD is an end-of-life planning curriculum for all ages developed by UW-Madison Division of Extension. This 7-session research-based program will help participants understand how to prepare for the end of life for themselves or a loved one, and why it’s important to have a plan in place. Stress Management

Join Extension for a WeCOPE workshop series in January 2026. We know that stress is a part of life. However, we can choose how to respond to stress. In WeCOPE, we learn 11 different skills that you can use in your daily life to deal with life’s stressors.

Early Childhood Education

“Emotion Coaching” is a workshop for Early Care and Education professionals. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Ives Grove Auditorium in Sturtevant. The registration fee is $10 and the deadline is April 1. Participants will receive 2.0 Registry Credits. “Gaining Cooperation in Children” is a workshop for Early Care and Education professionals. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Ives Grove Auditorium in Sturtevant. The registration fee is $10 and the deadline is January 16. Participants will receive 2.0 Registry Credits. Los padres de niños pequeños aprenden estrategias para promover un comportamiento positivo al enseñar habilidades sociales, establecer expectativas y ayudar a los niños a lidiar con sentimientos fuertes. Los programas se dan en la plataforma Zoom de 6:00-7:00 PM Esta es una serie. Cada sesión se basa en el tema de la clase anterior. Parents of young children learn strategies to promote positive behavior by teaching social skills, setting expectations, and helping children cope with strong feelings. Join Extension Racine County for fun and interactive learning events at your local library. Extension will offer programs for young children at four Racine County libraries from June to August. These programs focus on early literacy and learning.

Impact and Legacy

Extension Racine County is proud to share its 2024 Annual Report. Extension educators had a combined 11,336 educational contacts in the program areas of parent and financial education, 4-H and youth development, horticulture, agriculture, and nutrition education. Extension carries out the Wisconsin Idea that connects people and communities to the university and its resources.

Despite its restructuring, the legacy of UW-Extension continues to influence outreach and education efforts within the University of Wisconsin System. The programs and resources developed by UW-Extension remain valuable assets for Wisconsin communities, and its commitment to the Wisconsin Idea endures through the ongoing work of its former divisions within UW-Madison and the UW System.
