Upstate Medical University Arena: A Syracuse Landmark

The Upstate Medical University Arena, a multi-purpose arena in Syracuse, New York, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and vibrant entertainment scene. Originally known as the Onondaga County War Memorial and later as the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, this iconic venue has been a cornerstone of the community for over seven decades. As part of the Oncenter Complex, the arena has hosted a wide array of events, from sporting competitions and concerts to family shows and conventions, solidifying its place as a versatile and beloved landmark.

Historical Significance and Design

Built between 1949 and 1951, the Upstate Medical University Arena was designed by Edgarton and Edgarton. The structure holds significance as a memorial to World War I, World War II, and the Aroostook War veterans. It is also recognized as "an early and sophisticated example of single-span thin-shell concrete roof construction." The arena's architectural importance led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The initial construction cost was $3.7 million.

Naming Rights and Sponsorship

On December 20, 2019, Onondaga County, Upstate Medical University, and the Syracuse Crunch announced an 11-year sponsorship agreement, which included naming rights for the arena. This partnership resulted in the current name: Upstate Medical University Arena at Onondaga County War Memorial.

A Hub for Sports

The Upstate Medical University Arena has a long and storied history with various sports teams. It currently serves as the home of the Syracuse Crunch, an American Hockey League team. Throughout the years, the arena has also been home to several now-defunct American Hockey League teams. Other notable teams that have called the War Memorial home include the NBA's Syracuse Nationals, the NLL's Syracuse Smash, and the Major Arena Soccer League's Syracuse Silver Knights.

One of the most memorable moments in the arena's history occurred when the Syracuse Nationals defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in a deciding seventh game to win the 1954-55 NBA Championship.
