Eligibility and Nomination

To participate in the USC Price School exchange program, students must be formally nominated by the international exchange coordinator at their home institution. The first step is to complete the internal application process at your home university. Students who wish to participate in the exchange shall submit applications to the international programs coordinator (or other designated official) of your home institution.

Academic Enrollment

Undergraduate Students: Undergraduate exchange students can enroll in a maximum of 16 units per semester, typically consisting of 4 academic courses. They can enroll in undergraduate courses (numbered 4XX or below, with 100-level courses generally for first-year students) for which they are qualified, within other departments. Note that some departments may restrict enrollment to students in specific majors. It's important to be aware that some courses require prerequisite courses or equivalent coursework. Enrollment in graduate courses numbered 500 or higher is not permitted.

Graduate Students: Graduate students are considered full-time when enrolled in 8 units and may take up to 12 units of elective courses during their stay at the Price School. While graduate students have the freedom to choose their electives, they should consult with their home institution to ensure compliance with any regulations regarding their study plan. Additionally, they must meet any prerequisites for the Price School courses.

Enrollment in the USC health insurance plan is automatic. Foreign carriers/insurers are generally not sufficient, as most insurance companies will not pay for services outside of the home country or will only reimburse upon return. USC’s student health insurance plan does not cover dental work and eye care, so it is advisable to have a thorough dental check-up and address any emerging problems before arriving at USC. Dental insurance is optional and can be purchased upon arrival.

Housing Options

USC offers a variety of housing options both on and off-campus. Prior to your interview, you will be required to pay the SEVIS fee, which can be paid online. To study in the United States, exchange students will need to obtain a J-1 visa. To apply for the visa, students must schedule an interview at the nearest US Consulate or Embassy. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up for an interview as early as possible. You will need to bring required documents to the US Consulate/Embassy nearest your home to obtain a visa. A J-1 visa will be good for the length of the program of study. Students should consult government rules and regulations and contact their consulate or embassy in your city of residence for specific requirements.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

The University of Southern California is fortunate to have generous benefactors who have created scholarships for students demonstrating academic excellence and/or financial need. The specific names of these awards vary based on the name of the scholarship donor. In the future we may replace your University Scholarship with a named Donor Scholarship. Recipients of University Scholarships often receive other USC and private scholarships.

It's important to understand how other awards from USC or other sources, including need-based financial aid, may affect or be affected by your University Scholarship. You do not need to apply for financial aid to receive your University Scholarship.

Transferability of Financial Aid: Most types of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and tuition assistance benefits, are transferrable to official USC-sponsored study abroad programs. However, the amount of aid will be adjusted based on the program-specific cost of attendance. Some types of financial aid may be reduced if the overseas program costs less than one semester of on-campus USC study.

USC Merit Scholarships: Students receiving USC Merit Scholarships that cover tuition only (such as the Presidential and Trustee) may receive the same dollar amount they would receive at USC, as long as the awards are applied to tuition only.

Financial Aid Application Deadlines: It is crucial to apply for financial aid as usual by submitting all required documents by the posted deadlines.

Changes to Enrollment Plans: Both undergraduate and graduate students should submit a new Financial Aid Supplement any time their enrollment plans for the study abroad semester differ from their current USC enrollment.

To appeal, request a memo from your academic advisor or program instructor detailing the estimated costs and upload it to your FAST page as a budget appeal (Appeal Concerning Increase in Estimated Cost of Attendance).

Scholarship Renewal

The University Scholarship is renewable for an additional three years (four years for students in the five-year architecture program) if you make normal academic progress toward your undergraduate degree during each academic year (not including summer) and maintain your academic standing with USC. If you are academically disqualified by the USC Office of Academic Records and Registrar and the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP), you will lose your scholarship.
