Navigating UT Austin Student Health Insurance Requirements
The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) prioritizes the health and well-being of its students. As such, it has established specific health insurance requirements, particularly for international students. This article provides a comprehensive overview of these requirements, available options, and enrollment procedures.
Mandatory Insurance for International Students
The University of Texas Board of Regents mandates that all international students enrolled at UT Austin with an immigration status of F or J must have health insurance. To ensure compliance, enrollment in the AcademicBlue UT Student Health Insurance Plan is automatic upon registration, and the policy cost is included in the student’s tuition and fee bill.
Automatic Billing and Enrollment
International students with F or J immigration status are automatically billed for health insurance through their student tuition bill. Therefore, they do not need to submit a health insurance enrollment form.
Waiver Eligibility
While the AcademicBlue UT Student Health Insurance Plan is mandatory for international students with F or J status, they may be eligible to waive the cost and coverage if they can present an alternative insurance policy that provides comparable benefits. This alternative policy must comply with UT System and visa regulations. Students seeking a waiver must present their alternative insurance policy to International Student and Scholar Services.
AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance Plan
The University of Texas System offers the AcademicBlue student health insurance plan, underwritten by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) and administered by Academic Health Plans (AHP).

Coverage and Costs
Insurance coverage is charged by term: fall, spring, and summer. The Fall tuition bill includes the cost of insurance for the fall semester, while the Spring tuition bill includes the cost of insurance for both spring and summer terms.

Information sessions regarding AcademicBlue UT Health Insurance are offered during Fall Orientation. Further details regarding the plan are provided during the check-in process in myIO.

Optional Coverage and Enrollment
While the AcademicBlue plan is mandatory for certain international students, UT Austin offers additional options for all students, including optional dental and vision coverage, as well as dependent enrollment.
Optional Dental and Vision Coverage
Students can add optional dental or vision coverage through Academic Health Plans (AHP). To enroll, students should visit the Academic Health Plans online enrollment page and click on "International & ESL Students." It's important to note that students will pay AHP directly for these insurance premiums and will need to enroll in this optional coverage each semester.

Dependent Enrollment
Students who wish to enroll their dependents (spouse or children) in coverage through AHP can do so through the Academic Health Plans online enrollment page. Those not employed in a benefits-eligible position at UT Austin should click on "Dependent Coverage" under the "International & ESL Students" heading. Students will need to re-enroll their dependents each term they wish to continue their coverage through AHP.
Students employed in a benefits-eligible position at UT Austin (e.g., TA/GRA) may be able to enroll their dependents through their hiring department. Since Texas Global does not administer insurance for UT Austin employees, these students should contact their departmental Human Resources coordinator for assistance as soon as possible to ensure compliance with enrollment deadlines.
Enrollment Instructions
To enroll in optional coverage or enroll dependents, students should visit the Academic Health Plans online enrollment page and follow the instructions provided. For additional guidance, students can download the Online Enrollment Student Experience Guide (PDF).
Important Considerations
The International Insurance Team does not process enrollment in optional vision or dental care and cannot assist with dependent enrollment. Their office can only enroll and assist current UT Austin students with an active F- or J- immigration status. The minimum purchase available is one month of coverage.
Insurance for J-1 Faculty & Scholars
This page also provides insurance enrollment instructions for J-1 Faculty & Scholars who are interested in purchasing AHP coverage.

Continuation Coverage for Graduating Students
Graduating students may purchase three months of "Continuation Coverage," provided they meet eligibility requirements. To do so, they should go to the Academic Health Plans online enrollment page.
Resources for Graduate Students
As a graduate student at UT Austin, you have multiple health insurance options available at varying costs, depending on your status as a student, employee, or fellowship holder. During your time as a graduate student, you may experience changes in eligibility for the various types of insurance as your employment or funding status changes. Several offices on campus provide and administer health care and insurance resources for graduate students, including Human Resources and University Health Services.
Using Your Insurance
Understanding how to use insurance benefits and receive health care in the United States can be confusing. Students should review helpful information before their appointments to ensure they understand their coverage and how to access care.
Student Insurance Waivers
Students may be eligible to waive the UT System Student Health Insurance Plan if they can provide proof of comparable coverage that complies with UT System and visa regulations. All students are encouraged to have health insurance coverage. The Student Health Insurance Plan is an optional University of Texas System-sponsored health insurance plan available to currently enrolled University of Texas at Austin students. Information and enrollment are available online.
