Understanding UVA Admissions: GPA, Test Scores, and More

The University of Virginia (UVA), founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, is a highly competitive public research university. Gaining admission requires a well-rounded application that showcases academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and unique personal qualities. While there are no officially published UVA GPA requirements, understanding the academic expectations and other factors influencing admission is crucial for prospective students.

Academic Excellence: GPA and Coursework

Although UVA does not specify a minimum GPA, successful applicants typically have outstanding academic records. The average admitted student has a GPA of 4.31. To meet unofficial UVA GPA requirements, students should challenge themselves with rigorous coursework and strive for high marks. A cumulative GPA reveals little about the difficulty of a student's course load, or whether a student's grades have improved over time, or the level of grade inflation (or deflation) in a student's school.

High School Coursework Recommendations for UVA Wise

UVA Wise provides a guideline for high school coursework:

Four (4) years of English
Three (3) years of Mathematics, including Algebra I and II, and a third course to be chosen from geometry, advanced algebra & trigonometry, calculus, or a related course.
Two (2) or more years of science (beyond general science)
Two (2) or more years of a foreign language
One (1) year of American history
One (1) year of world history

Applicants to UVA Wise must meet one of the following educational requirements:

3.0 Cumulative High School GPA (4.0 Scale)
High School Class Rank - Top 50% AND a minimum 2.0 cumulative High School GPA
17 ACT Composite Score or 900 SAT Composite Score (test optional) AND a minimum 2.0 cumulative High School GPA

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT Scores

UVA has a test-flexible policy. UVA hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores. It is likely test flexible and says, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to UVA will submit their scores.

The middle 50% average UVA SAT scores range from 660-740 (Verbal) and 660-770 (Math), while the middle 50% composite ACT scores range from 30-34.

SAT Strategies

UVA superscores the SAT. UVA will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and UVA forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1540, it is strongly recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time.

ACT Strategies

The average ACT score at UVA is 33. The 25th percentile ACT score is 32, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 34. When you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 34 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT.

Beyond Academics: A Holistic Review

UVA employs a holistic admissions process, considering factors beyond GPA and test scores. These include:

Extracurricular Activities: UVA seeks students who are passionate, engaged, and leaders. There are no right or wrong activities to choose from.
Essays: The UVA supplemental essays are crucial for showcasing your personality, values, and experiences. Be authentic and highlight your best qualities. All final submitted materials should be your original work.
Letters of Recommendation: A strong letter of recommendation from a teacher of an academic subject can provide valuable insights into your school performance.

Application Deadlines and Strategies

Special Programs and Considerations

In-State Advantage: The University has pledged for two-thirds of UVA enrollment to be from in-state, making out-of-state UVA admissions more competitive. Last year, UVA admitted 25.5% of the Virginia residents and 13% of the non-Virginians.

Additional Information for Graduate Students

Applicants to degree programs in Economics, Philosophy, Sociology and Statistics are required to record their scores from the GRE on their electronic application. Official scores are not necessary for the review process, but will be required if the applicant matriculates as a student.

All international students must submit TOEFL scores. The minimum score requirement for either the internet-based (iBT) TOEFL or the paper-based TOEFL is 90 (including sectional minimums of 22 in speaking, 22 in writing, 23 in reading and 23 in listening.

Applicants must upload unofficial transcripts of their entire post-secondary academic record to the online application, including all undergraduate- and graduate-level coursework.

The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs offers application fee waivers to US citizens and US permanent residents who demonstrate a financial hardship, current or former members of the United States Armed Forces, or those who have participated in specified organizations and training programs.
