A New Chapter for Tradition: The UVM Alumni House and Jack and Shirley Silver Pavilion

The University of Vermont (UVM) has a storied history, and a significant part of that history has been revitalized with the restoration of the Alumni House and the addition of the Jack and Shirley Silver Pavilion. A ribbon-cutting ceremony this fall marked the official opening of this combined space, located at 61 Summit Street in Burlington, Vermont, signaling a new era for alumni engagement and university events.

From Wells Mansion to Alumni Hub: A Historic Transformation

The centerpiece of this project is the Alumni House itself, a three-story, 18,000 square foot historic mansion. Originally constructed in 1892 for Edward Wells, the house stands as a testament to Burlington's architectural heritage. For many years, from 1924 to 2003, the building served as the home of the Delta Psi Fraternity. UVM acquired the property in 2007, recognizing its potential as a central location for alumni activities.

The restoration of the Wells Mansion was a multi-phased project. Phase 1, focusing on the exterior, was completed in 2012, setting the stage for the comprehensive interior renovations that would follow. The restored mansion now houses a variety of functions essential to the UVM Alumni Foundation. The upper floors provide office space for the foundation's staff, while the basement has been transformed into a call center. One of the most unique features is the pub, located in the restored second-floor tower room and the former Mrs. Wells' bedroom, offering a distinctive space for alumni to gather and reminisce.

The Jack and Shirley Silver Pavilion: A Modern Space for Connection

Complementing the historic charm of the Alumni House is the newly constructed Jack and Shirley Silver Pavilion. This building provides a modern gathering and event space capable of accommodating up to 220 guests. The pavilion is designed to host a wide range of activities, including alumni events, university functions, and community gatherings. In the future, it will also be available as a rental hall for weddings and other private events, further solidifying its role as a valuable asset for both the university and the wider community.

Integrated Project Management: A Collaborative Effort

The successful completion of the Alumni House restoration and the construction of the Silver Pavilion was the result of a collaborative effort. Bread Loaf Corporation provided integrated project management services for the design, restoration, and construction of the building. They worked closely with the UVM Alumni Foundation and UVM Planning and Facilities to ensure that the project met the needs of all stakeholders and honored the historical significance of the Wells Mansion.
