Western New England University School of Law is a private institution accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). Established in 1919 as a branch of Northeastern University (then Northeastern College), it initially offered evening law classes. The first seven law graduates were recognized in 1923. In 1951, Western New England College gained an independent charter, ending its affiliation with Northeastern. The full-time law program commenced in 1973, further solidifying the school's commitment to comprehensive legal education. The law school boasts an alumni network of approximately 8,000 individuals.

The S. Prestley Blake Law Center, which houses the law school, first opened in 1978. The building is named after S. Prestley Blake, who made a substantial gift to the project. Major renovations were completed in 2007, including a new wing, lobby, and entrance, enhancing the facilities and resources available to students. On July 1, 2011, Western New England College School of Law officially became Western New England University School of Law.

Academic Programs

The primary aim of the law school is its Juris Doctor (J.D.) program. The J.D. program is structured to prepare students for the practice of law in any American jurisdiction. Students begin with required courses that form the foundation for more advanced legal studies. Students can customize the JD program through electives and experiential learning opportunities to fit their professional goals. The school also offers a part-time day or evening program to accommodate students with varying schedules.

In addition to the J.D. program, the law school offers an LLM in Elder Law and Estate Planning.

Undergraduates of certain undergraduate institutions can take advantage of the "3+3 program," which allows certain students to complete a B.A. and a J.D. in six years.

Juris Doctor (JD) Program

Western New England University School of Law will inspire and support students to become true students of law and skilled practitioners. In the JD program, students will learn the science of legal study as a methodology to analyze legal and social issues. Students will develop the ability to perform careful research and write thorough and precise legal memoranda and scholarly papers. Students will be prepared to artfully articulate persuasive legal arguments and apply them in a professional context through clinics, externships, and moot court experiences. In small classes, students will be taught by full-time faculty who teach all required day and evening courses. Students will graduate prepared to use their law degree to make an impact on their profession and society.

Lawyering Skills is a required first-year course that teaches the basic techniques of legal research, writing, and analysis. While students are not required to pursue a concentration, they may choose to do so to focus their studies on a specific practice area. The experiential learning requirement provides opportunities to gain real-world legal experience. All students are required to complete 20 hours of pro bono legal work prior to graduation.

LLM in Elder Law and Estate Planning

The only live, interactive, online LLM in Elder Law and Estate Planning in the United States, this program offers a unique opportunity for you to take your practice in a new direction or strengthen your expertise to advocate for elders and their families. In this 24-credit program, students will gain an extensive knowledge of and training in a number of diverse areas of law, including wills and trusts, estate and fiduciary administration, income taxation, federal wealth transfer taxation, and the use of various entities and products (particularly trusts and insurance products) in wealth planning and management. The program also develops expertise in social security law, Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state laws and regulations that directly affect these clients.

The aging of the population provides an unprecedented need for informed advisors who can help individuals and families navigate healthcare legal issues, provide for special needs children, and plan for the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in history. The program teaches the practical aspects of drafting estate plans, administering the settlement of estates, and representing elderly clients and families. In their final project, students will create a complex plan and develop their own set of planning documents. The in-depth knowledge gained from this experience will help students distinguish their practice and help them to inform and educate their clients on a very personal level.

A pioneer in live, online elder law and estate planning education, Western New England University School of Law is accredited by the ABA. All courses are live and taught online so you get immediate interaction with faculty and classmates through the use of virtual classrooms in real time. Each student can actively participate in classroom discussions. Since the primary objective of the program is to prepare the students to practice elder law and estate planning, the courses will emphasize the practical aspects of planning for elders, drafting estate plans, and administering estates.

Clinics, practicums, and simulation courses are integral components of the curriculum. Clinics and Practicums

Clinics provide an opportunity for upper-class students to represent clients with actual legal problems. Currently, the School of Law offers nine different clinics in which students can gain valuable lawyering skills, such as legal writing, interviewing, and negotiating.

Family Law Mediation Clinic: Students mediate family law cases at the Hampden Probate and Family Court.
Global Justice Clinic
Legal Aid Clinic students are placed at Community Legal Aid (CLA), a private, non-profit organization that provides civil legal assistance to poor people and elders.
Legal Aid Clinic/Immigration Unit: Students in the Legal Aid Clinic/Immigration Unit work at the office of the Central West Justice Center (CWJC), a subsidiary of Community Legal Aid. Students work on humanitarian immigration cases, including applications for asylum for individuals fleeing persecution, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for abused, neglected, and abandoned children, relief under the Violence Against Women Act for survivors of domestic violence, and U visas for crime victims. Students also interview clients and witnesses, prepare affidavits, assist in gathering documentary evidence, and research and write legal memoranda.
Real Estate Practicum: Students are placed with practicing lawyers and title insurance companies to learn the ins and outs of real estate practice.
Small Business Clinic: Students provide legal services to local small businesses. Law stuÂdents work on start-up transactional legal matters, including choice-of-entity, employment policies, contract drafting, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property issues.

Simulation courses allow students to represent hypothetical clients with challenging legal problems drawn from the experiences of practicing lawyers.

Externships

Externships enable students to work with judges or alongside attorneys in public interest organizations or government agencies. Externs are called upon to perform research and prepare legal documents. Externships allow students to refine their lawyering skills and provide interaction with professionals who can offer advice and career insights. WNE Law provides a diverse range of 40+ externships, aimed at aiding students in acquiring experiential learning opportunities. Types of Externship Placements include Governmental Agency, Judicial Chambers, Nonprofit Organization, and Private Sector Law Firm.

Center for Social Justice

The Center for Social Justice was founded in 2019 with the stated mission to advance justice through research, education, advocacy, innovation, and public engagement to understand and address root causes of systemic social injustice and develop solutions for change.

Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship

The university's Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship also offers a resource for small business development in the greater Pioneer Valley region. The Small Business Clinic is the cornerstone program of the Center.

Public Interest Scholars Program

Each year, a small group of applicants will be selected to participate in the Public Interest Scholars program, with a scholarship award of up to $10,000. The program offers mentorship in the public interest space, as well as exclusive professional development opportunities. Scholars learn about public interest law via elective courses and speaker engagements at the School of Law and put their knowledge into action through pro bono projects. Scholars will also receive a one-time summer stipend for an approved public interest internship. Current projects include:

Student Life and Resources

Western New England University School of Law students enjoy a strong sense of community and support, strengthened and nurtured by numerous and varied student organizations and cocurricular activities. The Student Bar Association plays a leading role, with elected officers and appointed members to faculty/student committees. The Blake Law Center has a spacious law library, excellent classrooms, and comfortable student study and social space. The Law Center is located in a residential section of Springfield, on Western New England Universityâs 215-acre campus, with ample parking for all students.

Admission and Scholarships

Every application is read by members of the Admissions Committee. All facets of the application are carefully considered, including race, gender, language, and educational, social, and economic obstacles overcome in the applicantâs pursuit of higher education. The school seeks candidates with well-developed writing ability and analytical skills who will contribute to classroom discussions and the law school community. Each year, tuition scholarships are awarded to applicants whose credentials demonstrate potential for success, and whose backgrounds suggest they are likely to enrich the student life of the School of Law. All admitted applicants receive automatic scholarship consideration and are notified of awarded scholarships in their admit letter. Scholarships range from partial tuition to a full-tuition Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Scholarship.
