Founded on December 2, 1905, as Boiling Springs High School, the institution was sponsored by the Kings Mountain Baptist Association and the Sandy Run Baptist Association. In May 1905, Boiling Springs Baptist Church offered its old church house, five acres of land, and $2,700 for the school's establishment. Early Years
J.D. Huggins was appointed as the high school's first principal on July 25, 1907. The complete faculty, consisting of five teachers, was hired by the fall of 1907, and classes began in October of the same year. Transition to Junior College and Beyond
On September 3, 1928, the high school became Boiling Springs Junior College. In 1942, Governor O. Max Gardner began supporting the college, and the institution was renamed Gardner-Webb Junior College in honor of Gardner and his wife, Fay Webb-Gardner. Achieving University Status
On October 23, 1969, Gardner-Webb filed for an official name change to Gardner-Webb College in preparation for its first four-year class in 1971.
