This involves researching universities and programs, checking age requirements, and consulting with academic advisors.

Passport Application

Applying for a passport should be one of the first steps in your study abroad preparations. Application forms can often be obtained from study abroad fairs or online. It's crucial to gather all necessary documents and apply well in advance of your planned departure date to avoid any last-minute stress.

Visa Application

Obtaining a student visa is a critical step for most international students. The visa application process can vary depending on your nationality, so it's essential to research the specific requirements for South Korea. Prepare all required documents meticulously, and apply as soon as possible to ensure your visa is issued in time for your departure.

Flight Booking Strategies

Flights to Seoul can be long and expensive, especially from distant locations. Consider various strategies to minimize costs and travel time. Booking connecting flights through domestic airlines and then taking a direct flight to Incheon International Airport can sometimes be more economical. When booking connecting flights, allow ample layover time to account for potential delays or issues.

After a while, you’ll realize you’re being asked the same questions in different formats, and can pull from your previous responses while tweaking them to fit the new prompts. After receiving your home university aid award letter for your study abroad term, you can send it to IES Abroad along with an aid disbursement schedule. They’ll hold off on charging you the amount you’re due to receive in scholarships at a later date. This is only applicable if you are paying IES Abroad directly for your program.

Banking and Phone Services

Before leaving, check with your bank about international fees associated with your debit card. Consider opening a new bank account with a debit card that doesn't charge international fees to save money on transactions. Additionally, ensure your phone is unlocked, allowing you to use an e-SIM in Korea for local data access.

Essential Items to Pack

Pack essential items such as plug adapters, as South Korea uses different shaped plugs and a 220 V electrical system. If your devices aren't compatible with 220 V, you'll need a voltage converter. Also, bring a portable charger to keep your devices powered on the go. Consider packing versatile wardrobe items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits.

Navigating Academics at Yonsei University

Academic Programs and Course Selection

Yonsei University has 114 academic programs in 23 colleges, offering instruction in most of the normal “arts and sciences” subjects.

Students can pursue classes in any major. Yonsei University is particularly strong in business, economics, and political science. Students interested in East Asian culture will find this program especially rewarding. You can take a class on Korean history, study Korean pop culture, experience the comedy of Nanta, a wordless cooking performance, and learn about K-drama.

Click "Course Catalogue and Syllabus".
Choose from among the Undergraduate Programs list, and choose the appropriate college for the subject you wish to explore. You must choose a college, but you do not need to choose any other drop downs if you prefer not to.
Choose the appropriate year and semester. Because catalogs will not complete for the semester you plan to search for, you will need to choose that semester for the previous year. For example, if you plan to study abroad for Fall 2025, select "2nd semester" and "2024" for Fall 2024 classes.
6. Click the magnifying glass to do a search. If no classes generate, there are either no English-taught classes in that subject, or the catalog hasn't been created for that semester.

Credit Transfer and Course Load

As a participant in the Seoul Exchange Program, you remain registered as a full-time student in the College. You will receive full credit for your work at Yonsei. Normally, students who participate for the full academic year receive ten to twelve (maximum) credits. Students studying for a semester receive four (maximum) credits. Course titles, units of credit, and grades are placed on your Chicago transcript. Since the use of these credits in a specific degree program is variable, students should consult with their academic adviser and program chair to determine exactly how credits may be distributed toward degree progress. Students are required to carry a full-time course load of minimum equivalence to three Chicago credits per term.

Language Proficiency

Students who would like to attend classes in Korean must provide proof of Korean language proficiency (KLPT level 4 or above or assessment by a Korean instructor). For students applying from a non-native English-speaking country AND your current degree program at your home university is taught 100% in English, you do not need to submit proof of a valid English language exam.

Restrictions

Students must be enrolled in a business-related major at their home university in order to take courses in the Department of Business Administration. ISEP students may enroll in a maximum of four business courses from the Department of Business Administration. Some courses in the Underwood International College are open to ISEP students on a space-available basis. Registration for courses in Computer Science is competitive and seat availability is limited. Students looking to take Korean classes can enroll in courses in the Korean Language Institute. The KLI offers both 3-credit Basic Korean classes (IEE1011-1013) and 6-credit Intensive Korean classes (KLI1001-1006, KLI1008-1009). The college of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, music, law and MBA, as well as, the biomedical engineering field of study, are not available to exchange students.

Housing Options

Students have the option of on-campus housing of various types, or off-campus private housing if you prefer. Students apply for dormitory accommodation through Yonsei’s portal once they have been admitted. Although housing costs will be reimbursed (see below under Finances), it is your responsibility to complete the online application for housing and to pay the deposit during the summer preceding your arrival, as reimbursement from the scholarship takes place upon arrival in Seoul.

Campus Environment

Yonsei University also has one of the most beautiful campuses. Recently renovated, the modern and historical buildings are surrounded by various gardens, fountains, and monuments. The main quad area resembles an Ivy League university with gothic stone buildings. Apart from the campus, Yonsei university is located right in front of Sinchon, a lively college neighborhood full of restaurants and exciting nightlife.

Extracurricular Activities and Clubs

Yonsei University is a dynamic learning environment that holds many events and activities throughout the year. International students might be particularly interested in Yonsei Global, which consists of Yonsei University student volunteers. It aims to provide 30,000 Yonseians with a variety of world views and help them experience diverse cultures. Yonsei Global plans and prepares programs that create opportunities for Yonseians to meet students with overseas experience as well as exchange students every month. The Mentors Club encourages interaction between international and regular Yonsei students on a one-to-one basis called the Buddy Program. International students are matched with Yonsei students in pairs based on their interests, hobbies and goals written on their applications. It aims to promote community and friendship and continuing cultural learning and interaction through shared experiences.

Brian (Kyung Hwan) Min, ISEP’s Seoul-based Regional Coordinator for Asia, provides extra support for ISEP students in Seoul and holds ISEP student meet-up events two to three times a semester. Past examples of events he has held include stamp-making and leather case-making, temple food tasting and a K-pop dancing session. Brian has an academic background in Psychology (BA), Women’s and Gender Studies (BA), and Higher Education and Student Affairs (MA). After studying in the US, Brian returned to Korea in 2015 and served in the Air Force. He has also worked in intercultural education, tourism, online teaching, and entrepreneurship (start-up).
