Navigating Challenges: Controversies Involving Zeta Beta Tau
Like many fraternities, Zeta Beta Tau has faced its share of challenges and controversies. These incidents have raised important questions about conduct, accountability, and the role of fraternities in campus life.
In 1988, the ZBT chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Madison held a mock slave auction featuring blackface and racial slurs. In February 1988, the Judicial Inquiry Office of the University of Pennsylvania charged the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity with violating several statutes and university guidelines, including those related to sexual and racial harassment. In this instance, the fraternity was accused of hiring two African American women to perform before an audience of 100 to 200 men during a rush event.
More recently, in August 2018, the national fraternity and the chapter at UCLA were sued for negligence, assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In April 2015, members of the fraternity's University of Florida chapter were accused of abusing disabled military veterans during a Warrior Beach Retreat in Panama City Beach, Florida. The University of Florida placed the ZBT chapter on interim suspension and charged the organization with a series of offenses.

In another incident, UCLA suspended the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity for the fall quarter after members violated the university's alcohol policies at a Palm Springs party. At this party, three fraternity members were accused of sexually assaulting a sorority woman. Although the district attorney's office did not file rape charges, campus officials found that ZBT had served alcohol to underage students.
