Support Services

For individuals who are unsure about their next steps, adult education counselors are available at adult schools and community colleges throughout North Santa Clara County, including Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, and San Jose. These counselors provide guidance and support to help students explore their options and make informed decisions about their educational and career paths.

Program Offerings

Santa Clara County offers a wide variety of adult education programs to meet the diverse needs of its residents. These programs include:

High School Equivalency (HSE) and Adult High School Diploma Programs

  • High School Equivalency (HiSET and GED) Preparation: These classes offer computer-based and individualized instruction in basic skills, including math, writing, and reading, as well as HiSET and GED preparation. Official HiSET testing is also available.
  • Adult High School Diploma Program: This program offers independent study instruction and support in academic subjects. Classes follow district and state learning standards, and students who complete the requirements receive their high school diploma. In 2016, Candy Torres enrolled at CACE to earn her high school diploma. While pursuing her high school diploma, Candy’s daughter was born and although she had to take a leave of absence, the staff and teachers at CACE supported her.

English Learner Program

The English Learner Program offers English classes available from beginning literacy through advanced levels. Placement testing is required to ensure students are placed in the appropriate level. Specialized EL classes are also available, including English for childcare, food service, and healthcare. These specialized classes are offered through collaboration with Mission and West Valley Colleges.

Career Training Programs

Santa Clara Adult Education offers career training programs designed to provide students with the skills they need to meet 21st-century labor market demands. These programs include:

  • Medical Assistant Training Program: This program provides students with proficiency in Front and Back Office skills. The program includes 375 hours of classroom instruction and a placement at a clinic or doctor's office for 160 hours of externship.
  • DeAnza Auto Technology: This program offers free auto tech certification.
  • Child Development: Santa Clara Adult Education offers career training programs in Child Development that provide students with the skills they need for 21st-century labor market demands.

Community Classes

Community Classes offer a wide variety of fee-based classes in areas such as cooking, dancing, gardening, piano, sewing, knitting, woodworking, and world languages. Classes are offered during the day, evening, or on weekends.

Exercise and Wellness Classes

Exercise and Wellness classes include dance, exercise, fencing, personal growth, soccer, swimming lessons, volleyball, water exercise and yoga. Classes are offered during the day, evening or on weekends.

Programs for Adults with Disabilities

  • Independence Network: This program offers classes for adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities, providing enrichment, skills-building, and community classes. Students can choose to attend full-time or part-time. New students should be referred through the San Andreas Regional Center.
  • Skills Plus Program: This program serves adults who suffer from neurological impairments like stroke and Parkinson's disease. Education and training are offered in walking, speaking, and other independent living skills. Classes are taught by licensed and credentialed speech, physical and occupational therapists.

Wilson Preschool

Wilson Preschool is a parent participation and parent education preschool. Parents actively participate in the classroom one day each week. Support for Low-Income Students

An onsite CalWorks representative supports low-income students who need training and work experience. Services include assistance with transportation, child care, and counseling to assist students in achieving success.

Transition Services

Onsite transition specialists (TS) support students that want to enroll in ABE/HSE, CTE, and EL Programs. An Adults with Disabilities Specialist/School Psychologist is available to support the needs of students in the ABE/HSE, EL, and HSD Programs. The specialist meets individually with students to assist with learning challenges and testing accommodations, as well as other educational support services.

The SBCAE is committed to promoting equity and inclusion in adult education. As a consortium, they believe in changing structures and systems so that institutional practices are inclusive, supportive, and tailored to each student’s needs. This includes addressing institutional racism and its impact on the Black community.

The SBCAE recognizes that institutional racism exists and disproportionately impacts Black community members.
