Higher Education in Austria

Students start studying in Austria from the age of 6 and education is compulsory in this country from the first to ninth year and is provided for free. Primary schools start from the age of 6 to 9, after which students enter the secondary school (middle school). Students from the age of 10 to 17 study in this educational stage, which is also divided into two sections, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary. International students who have completed 12 years of study can apply for a bachelor’s degree if they have an IELTS language certificate with a score of 6. The duration of a bachelor’s degree varies between 3 to 4 years. At the University of Vienna, for example, in some of the fields of study international students must pay € 726.72 per semester, and students should also pay a small fee of € 79.19 to the student union.

The main difference between Fachhochschule and other universities is that Fachhochschule courses focus more on the practical work aspect of the courses and its main goal is to prepare people to enter the job market. To enter the Fachhochschule courses, you must earn the passing score by taking the entrance exam. You should note that this exam is in German. Therefore, there is a language requirement for entering these courses and you must have a German language certificate at B2 level. This entrance exam is created depending on the desired field and can vary in each university. The questions in this exam are multiple-choice questions and descriptive question.

In order to a bachelor’s or master’s degree you are required to do an internship, which depending on your field of study these internships may last longer. The duration of an internship course is at least one semester. In addition to the internship you must present a thesis. The thesis is required in bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Only by passing the internship course and presenting a thesis you can participate in the final exam and you can receive your degree if you pass this exam.

If you want to compare Fachhochschule courses with other universities when it comes to studying in Germany or Austria, by mastering English and having an IELTS language certificate and without having to take an entrance exam you can study at most of these universities in English. Of course, the cost of studying in English is higher and is between 10,000 to 17,000 euros per year. There are also universities that you can apply to without having an IELTS language certificate, and the cost of language courses will be added to the annual tuition fees.

Many universities are in touch with companies and offer internships to their students in these types of companies and will help their students to find suitable jobs. Another point about these universities is that the master’s degree courses are a one year-course in these universities and after this one year you can enter the labor market of this country.

Another important point is that all universities have specific deadlines for admitting a certain number of students, and in this case you must have provided the required documents in order to be able to register for the entrance exam (InTake) and note that the process of preparing these documents is a time consuming process.

In order to study a master’s degree, students must have a bachelor’s degree, and if students intend to study at a public university they must provide a B1language certificate, and for studying in English they must provide an IELTS language certificate with a score of 6.5 or higher.
