Themed Communities

Communities are created based on whether you're a first-year, second-year and above, or transfer student. Residents who participate in Themed Communities programs will engage in events and support services planned to help students be successful in college. Students learn about topic areas critical to their success and engage in programs meant to promote community building amongst faculty, staff, and peers. First year communities are located in the Residence Halls (Sicomoro and Secoya) and the Traditional Halls (Encinitas, Montecito, Alamitos and Aliso). All first-year residents can request placement within our College Themed Communities, which ties the academic experience with residence life.

Important Housing Information
Housing Portal
All housing actions, including applications and exemption requests, take place in the Housing Portal. Students are encouraged to update their mobile number in the Housing Portal to receive important text messages.
Exemption Requests
Exemption requests are open for required groups, including current first-year Cal Poly Scholars, TRIO Achievers, student-athletes, and CAFES, CAED and CENG students entering their second year. A limited number of additional spaces will be offered by lottery to all other Cal Poly students.
Off-Campus Housing
Students who are not required to live on campus should begin exploring off-campus options. Students not required to live on campus will not be released from their housing contract to live off-campus, so don’t complete your housing application if you’re not 100% sure you want to live in campus housing.
Housing Application
Students are responsible for making their own evaluations when selecting housing.
Maintenance Requests
To prevent mildew, wipe condensation from windows, allow air circulation on dry days, crack windows when it is not raining and dry wet items promptly. Report flooding, water damage or signs of mildew by submitting a Maintenance Request in the Housing Portal.
Community Events
Inter Housing Council (IHC), RAs/CAs and Faculty-in-Residence host events throughout the quarter. Check Cal Poly Now for upcoming activities.
