For Aspiring Interns:
- Attend the Career Exploration Symposium: This free event, held on February 17, provides an opportunity to hear from local employers and mentors, learn about the hiring process, and connect with past internship participants.
- Submit an Interest Form: Between February 17 and March 27, prospective YouthWorkers must fill out an Interest Form. All candidates, including returning candidates, are required to complete the form. Late forms will not be accepted due to the anticipated high volume of applicants.
- Prepare for an Interview: Selected YouthWorkers will be assigned an interview date with YouthWorks staff. Communication is essential if you cannot make your scheduled time. Interviews typically last 10-15 minutes.
- Complete Onboarding and Orientation: YouthWorkers will undergo an extensive onboarding process, including a livescan, an orientation to learn essential workplace skills, and online training required of all City of Berkeley employees. All steps must be completed to begin employment.
- Begin Work at Program Sites: From June 8 to August 7, over 150 YouthWorkers will be employed for a maximum of 30 hours each week at more than 30 different program sites. Roles, work schedules, and length will vary based on the needs of the sites.
- Participate in Workshops: Both participants and mentors will be invited to workshops. Youth workshops are weekly and pertain to life skills that supplement their work experience. Mentor workshops involve discussions and topics pertaining to best practices for supporting YouthWorkers at various sites.

- Meet requirements as stipulated for an educational, certification, or licensure program.
Other requirements include status as a US Citizen or legal permanent resident.

The Application Process:
The exam process for City of Berkeley internships includes:
- Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date).
- Tests, which may consist of any combination of written, oral, or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem-solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification.
The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
