Navigating the CSUN Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide

Accessing the CSUN Portal

Step 1: Logging In

  1. Go to the CSUN homepage at www.csun.edu.

  2. Select the CSUN Portal link from the MyCSUN menu, typically located in the top navigation of any CSUN webpage.

  3. Log in using your CSUN user ID and password.

    • New Employees: Your CSUN user ID and password will be issued when you sign in with Human Resources. Bring your completed New Employee Sign-In Form to the Human Resources office located in Room 165 of Valera Hall. The sign-in hours at Human Resources are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
    • First-Time Users: If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a CSUN User ID and password when you enroll for classes online.
    • Password Assistance: If you have an account in the SOLAR registration system but do not remember your password or User ID, go to the MyCSUN Portal login. Click on "Password" or "User ID" and follow the prompts. Use this information to access your account for the first time. Visit the Forgot My Password page to request a temporary code. Use this code to log in. You will then be prompted to change your password. If you need additional assistance, contact the IT Help Center by phone at (818) 677-1400 or stop by in person (University Library, first floor, Learning Commons).
    • Security: Multi-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your online accounts.

Portal Layout and Key Features

Upon logging in, the CSUN Student Portal home page displays. The desktop view typically features three columns. The center of the page contains dynamic sections such as My Checklist and My Status, which update based on your current standing and progress at CSUN.

My Checklist

This section is a dynamic tool that displays tasks, alerts, and resources relevant to your academic journey. It may contain up to five sections, depending on your specific situation:

  • Incomplete Tasks: This section displays tasks that require your attention.

    • Applicant: (For admitted first-time freshmen and transfer students) Displays the deadline to file your Intent to Enroll.
    • Registration Holds: Displays any holds that may block your enrollment (e.g., academic advising mandatory). It's crucial to clear these holds as soon as possible. Learn more at how to view and clear holds.
    • Student Records: Displays tasks related to student records (e.g., Title IX interpersonal nonviolence training required).
    • Admissions: Displays any missing admission requirements (e.g., missing transcripts). Final, official transcripts are due even after you are admitted.

  • Attention: Summarizes any outstanding charges due.

  • Registration: Displays information during active registration periods.

    • Your enrollment appointment date and time for the upcoming semester.
    • Your maximum unit load.

My Status

Located below My Checklist, this section provides a snapshot of your academic standing and application status. After being admitted, you’ll see both the Student and Applicant subsections under My Status. These sections list your:

  • Academic career and class level
  • Semester applied for
  • California residency status for CSU tuition purposes
  • Academic plan (major)
  • Application status
  • Intent to Enroll status (new first-time freshmen and first-time transfer students only)
  • Reminder to send any AP, CLEP and IB test scores if any. These are not required for admission but can help with your placement in first-semester classes.

SOLAR Student Center

Access the SOLAR Student Center from the CSUN Portal by selecting the Student Center backpack icon link in the Top Tools area. The SOLAR Student Center home page displays in three sections:

  • Academics
  • Finances
  • Personal Information

Managing Personal Information

The Personal Information section allows you to manage various aspects of your personal data and preferences within the CSUN system.

Emergency Contacts and Messages

  • Emergency Contact: Add or edit emergency contact persons.
  • Emergency Text Message: Check the box to allow CSUN’s Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness to send text messages to your mobile phone in an emergency.

Identity and Preferred Name

  • Preferred Name: To view your first, middle and last name of record select Preferred Name.

Preferred Names

  • Your primary and preferred names are the same unless you edit your preferred name. You can choose where your preferred name will display. However, official CSUN transcripts and FERPA directory information will reflect your legal name. Your preferred name will display on class and grade rosters, in Canvas, and in the CSUN Directory.
  • To change your full legal name, use the Legal Name Change Request (PDF).
  • To add your CSUN diploma name, first select the "Request Change" icon to view the Add a New Name box. Then choose "Name Type: Diploma" from the drop-down menu (not shown).
  • Select the pencil icon to edit your preferred first name.

Additional Tips and Information

  • New F-1 Visa Students: If you are an international first-time freshman or transfer student, you must contact The Hub International to be pre-enrolled in your first-semester classes. Visit New F-1 International Student Academic Advisement Instructions.
  • Pronunciation: You can record the pronunciation of your name and opt to display your MataCard student ID photo in class rosters via myCSUNprofile.
  • CSUN User ID: If you don't have your initial password, contact the IT Help Center in person or by phone.
  • Email Configuration: To configure email on devices, enter the following Server information: outlook.office365.com. Enter outlook.office365.com in the Server hostname field. Enter smtp.office365.com in the Server hostname field.
  • Transition to the New CSUN Portal: The legacy myNorthridge Portal was officially phased out on Monday, April 8, 2024. Access to the old portal is no longer available.   • Search Functionality: Use the search functionality to quickly find information and resources within the new CSUN Portal.
