Disney Versus Universal: A Theme Park Comparison

Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort are two major theme park destinations located near each other in Orlando, Florida. Both offer immersive experiences, but they cater to different tastes and preferences. This article explores the similarities and differences between these two resorts to help you decide which is the better choice for your vacation.

Similarities Between Disney World and Universal Orlando

Both Disney World and Universal Orlando are multi-day theme park resorts that offer a wide range of attractions, entertainment, and accommodations. They both require a significant investment of time and money. As direct competitors, they both aim to provide the ultimate theme park experience.

Key Differences

Despite their common goal, Disney World and Universal Orlando differ in several key aspects.

Parks and Intellectual Property

Walt Disney World consists of four main theme parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. Universal Orlando Resort currently features three parks: Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, and Universal Epic Universe.

Each resort is built around different intellectual properties. Disney World is home to classic characters like Mickey Mouse and franchises like Star Wars and Toy Story, while Universal Orlando boasts attractions based on Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and other popular movies and books. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you’ll need to go to Universal. If you want Star Wars, Disney World.

Cost

Disney is more expensive. For example, a late-2026 stay for four hotel nights and three days of park tickets with park hopping could cost:

  • Least Expensive Hotel: \$958 Disney vs. \$725 Universal
  • Most Expensive Hotel (cheapest room): \$4,293 Disney vs. \$3,866 Universal
  • 3-Day Ticket w/ Hopping: \$669 Disney

While a 3-day ticket at Disney grants access to four parks compared to Universal's three, this price difference is a factor to consider.

Visit Length

Disney World generally requires a longer visit than Universal Orlando. Disney typically requires about two more full days to experience the parks adequately. This translates to additional expenses for park tickets and hotel stays.

Target Audience

Disney World offers more attractions and entertainment options for younger children, while Universal Orlando is more thrill-focused and often considered better for teenagers and adults. Disney World has more for younger kids. Universal is more thrill-focused. Disney World has about 15 thrill rides across its four parks, while Universal has about 18 across its three parks.

Entertainment

Disney has more entertainment. Universal has a good streetmosphere lineup, and the two shows at Epic are excellent. But the parks still don’t really compete with the deeper entertainment lineups at Disney parks, including things like Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, Frozen Sing Along, Festival of the Lion King, or even any of the animatronic shows around Walt Disney World.

Other Differences

Several smaller differences can influence your decision between the two resorts.

Park Strategies

Universal Orlando is generally less complicated to navigate than Disney World. Universal's skip-the-line system (Universal Express Pass) is more expensive but simpler than Disney's Lightning Lane system. Universal generally has lower crowds, and the smaller ride lineups make the parks a little easier to tackle once you know how to get on the heavy hitters (hint: arrive early).

Hotels

Universal's hotels are often considered a better value, as they are typically cheaper than Disney's hotels. Generally, I think Universal’s hotels are slightly better and in particular are better value since they are cheaper than Disney’s hotels, and by a pretty significant amount sometimes.

Walkability

Universal Orlando is more walkable than Disney World. Several hotels, CityWalk, the two older Universal theme parks, and Volcano Bay (the water park) are all walkable. Epic Universe is walkable from three hotels, but most guests will have to drive or take a bus there. No matter where you stay at Disney, you’ll need to take the bus to at least two parks, and many hotels have buses to all four parks. Disney Springs-the shopping and dining district-is a bus ride away from most everything, while CityWalk at Universal is adjacent to both parks. Several Universal hotels have Starbucks.

Dining

While opinions vary, Disney World is often considered to have better overall food and dining options.

Misconceptions

Some perceived differences between the resorts are not necessarily accurate.

Magic

Disney World is not inherently more magical than Universal Orlando. Both resorts offer unique and memorable experiences. I absolutely do not think Disney World is more magical than Universal.

Ride Quality

Both resorts have excellent rides, with attractions like Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Rise of the Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Jurassic World VelociCoaster receiving high praise. Everyone is going to have a preference for some rides over others, but Hagrid’s, Rise of the Resistance, Cosmic Rewind, Velocicoaster-these are all great rides.

Theme

Both resorts have immersive and well-themed lands and attractions. The overall portfolio of Disney World is probably more impressive from a thematic perspective, but I’ve found the Universal parks have so many spots that I just absolutely adore-particularly Diagon Alley and Moe’s Bar.

The "Bubble"

While Disney World was once known for its "bubble" experience, Universal Orlando has expanded to offer a similar level of immersion with its multiple theme parks, water park, and CityWalk entertainment district. Now, with three good theme parks and a water park, the resort can easily fill a three or four night trip in its own bubble.

Which is Better?

The choice between Universal Orlando and Disney World depends on your priorities and preferences. If you are a thrill-seeker or have older children, Universal Orlando might be a better fit. If you have younger children or prefer a more classic Disney experience, Disney World might be the better choice.

If everyone in your party is over 51 inches tall, Universal is the better pick right now. With its current lineup of thrill rides and the ever-amazing Wizarding World, I think Universal has enough present appeal, and Disney has enough coming around the bend that it’s worth waiting on that one for a few years. That calculus changes a bit if you have guests under 51 inches. For example, three full days at Disney World with, say, 1.5 days at Magic Kingdom, 1 day at EPCOT + Hollywood Studios, and 0.5 days at Animal Kingdom could be a very nice itinerary for a visit with a little one.
