On top of stability, education also provides financial security, especially in today’s society. If everyone was provided with the same opportunities to education, then there would be less gaps between social classes.
Education means studying in order to obtain a deeper knowledge and understanding of a variety of subjects to be applied to daily life. It is evident when it comes to being self-dependent. If we are educated, then it’s something that belongs to us, and only us, allowing us to rely on no one else other than ourselves.
Education is a powerful weapon, and with it, you can make all of your dreams come true. It’s not only needed on a personal level, but also on a global level, as it’s something that keeps our world safe and makes it a more peaceful place.

Economic constraints, coupled with issues of learning outcomes and dropout rates, persist in marginalized areas, underscoring the need for continued global commitment to ensuring inclusive and equitable education for all. Least developed countries faces the biggest challenges in providing schools with basic resources. About 40 per cent of countries have not achieved gender parity in primary education.

Cultural diversity in the classroom is on the rise. Ensuring that cultural awareness is promoted in the classroom starts with the teacher understanding each individual student. Take the time to learn about each student’s cultural background, hobbies, learning styles, and what makes them unique. Demonstrating a genuine interest in learning about each student and their culture will help establish trust and allow you to form a bond with them so they feel valued. Aside from getting to know your students, teachers should also continue to maintain ongoing communication throughout the semester or school year. Scheduling 1-on-1 meetings with students to “check in” every so often will allow you to consistently improve how accessible the classroom is to everyone. Students can talk about whether they felt included in the classroom culture. This can help identify issues or ways to improve the overall experience.
It’s also important for students to celebrate and respect their own diverse backgrounds, as well as each other’s. When appropriate, teachers should encourage students to research and learn about their own ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This allows them to better understand their own culture as well as the differences and nuances with their peers. As a bonus, this can be a great ice breaker assignment, allowing students to give presentations about their family traditions and culture to help expose the class to concepts outside of their own familiar comfort zone. Acknowledging these differences and creating a safe space for discussion helps promote understanding in the classroom and beyond. Also, as you encourage students to learn about their diverse backgrounds, remember to take the time to highlight what’s offensive and the distinction between cultural celebration and appropriation.
While it’s important to keep an open dialogue amongst students, it’s equally as important to make sure you’re being sensitive to everyone’s culture, beliefs, and language concerns. Take the time to understand each student’s cultural nuances - from learning styles to the language they use - and use these insights to design your lesson plans. For example, provide English language learners with appropriate and relevant resources that help them improve their English comprehension skills. Rather than teach with a traditional lecture style, create learning experiences that are more interactive and require collaboration.

For example, broaden history lessons so that they encompass the world beyond United States history and culture. Or, use references and analogies to other cultures in your lessons and assignments to help students with diverse backgrounds personally connect. Another great strategy is bringing in diverse speakers to add varying points of view and real-life context to different subjects. There are several ways you can ingrain cultural awareness and diversity into your lesson plan, and it will vary depending on the cultures represented in your classroom and the course you’re teaching. Regardless of the subject, always try to present and connect lessons to real-world issues.
Teachers often feel like they need to take on a strict, authoritative approach when it comes to managing their classroom. The most valuable lessons are often learned through a student’s own experiences, so giving them some freedom in the course encourages more connection to the curriculum. Allow students to read and present their own materials that relate to the fundamental lesson so they can approach the topic from their own perspective. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and encourage conversation and healthy debate between diverse opinions. Group assignments are also a great way to expose students to diverse perspectives, allowing them to work together to explore and solve a problem.

It is important to remind ourselves why diversity and cultural awareness is so crucial in the classroom and the benefits it can have on students now and in the long-term. Teaching diversity exposes students to various cultural and social groups, preparing students to become better citizens in their communities. Promoting awareness and creating a personal connection with diverse cultures in the classroom can prevent students from developing prejudices later in life. When working and learning with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures present in the classroom, students gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Naturally, by exposing students to a diverse range of opinions, thoughts, and cultural backgrounds, you’re encouraging them to be more open-minded later in life. Students who learn about different cultures during their education feel more comfortable and safe with these differences later in life. With the rise of globalization, it’s more important to be able to work with people from different cultures and social groups.
Raising Awareness of Academic Opportunities
Many universities offer countless student success resources and academic opportunities, but they may not be well-known to students. Certainly, efforts to raise student awareness and involvement in academic offerings exist, but research shows most universities do not advertise academic opportunities to students as much as social or extra-curricular ones. This oversight could impact marginalized or underrepresented students in detrimental ways because it leaves them on their own to navigate their undergraduate careers. Without prompting or support from an attentive faculty or staff member, impactful learning opportunities might fall completely under the students’ radar.
For students like first-generation college students (FGCS), it is extremely important that high-quality UR is mentored and often associated with financial awards (like Elon’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience and travel grants). Indeed, academic opportunities like UR are often financially supported by the university administration, offer some financial assistance or awards, are led or directed by permanent staff and faculty members who possess significant social and professional capital to help advance students’ careers, and contribute significantly to persistence in educational attainment for marginalized or historically excluded students.
In 2021, it was realized that after students matriculated, there were no university-wide events designed to help students explore these high-impact academic opportunities (or the scholarships, financial assistance, or awards they are sometimes associated with). As part of monthly programming for FGCS, an event called the Scholarship and Opportunities Fair, which aimed to promote students’ awareness of high-impact academic opportunities and supports was designed. The expansion of this fair was because it was the only across-campus event to our knowledge that brought together student support services, academic opportunities, and potential financial assistance or awards in one central venue to help students understand ways they could enrich their collegiate experience.
With significant leadership and support from Elon’s Center for Access and Success, CEL, and Residence Life, this event has grown over the years, and the planning for a third-annual spring Scholarship and Opportunities Fair is now in progress. Ultimately, the goal for the Scholarship and Opportunities Fair is to help all students learn about the range of high-impact mentored academic opportunities (and the financial awards or supports associated with some of them) that are available to students.
Legislation and Training
Legislation should establish and fund public awareness measures and trainings on harmful practices and women’s human rights aimed at all sectors including health care, education, judicial system, social services and the community at large. Legislation should require and provide for training teachers at the primary, secondary and higher education levels on women’s human rights and harmful practices. Training should cover teachers’ role in creating awareness among their students and the community regarding particular harmful practices, as well as identifying and sensitively providing or referring services to victims.
Public awareness and education are essential to changing social and cultural norms which perpetuate harmful practices. Training religious and community leaders who are influential in the society is also necessary to incorporate them in the process of changing cultural beliefs and practices. Women and girls should be supported in their efforts to empower themselves and demand respect for their human rights. In addition, all members of society should be made aware of the negative consequences of harmful practices.
States should develop a comprehensive strategy for disseminating the knowledge of the CRC throughout society, including providing children with information of sources of help and advice. Furthermore, the Committee puts special emphasis on incorporating learning about the CRC and human rights in general into the school curriculum at all stages. All those working with and for children are required to know the CRC and the important role of media in disseminating information on the CRC.
It is imperative for State agencies to cooperate with non-state actors including NGOs and CBOs in raising awareness in the communities. State agencies may be viewed with suspicion by the communities, and local NGOs and CBOs which have deep knowledge about the communities and are trusted by the people may be the most effective catalysts for change.
