Addressing Evolving Needs: A Responsive Approach
The Education Foundation of Martin County is committed to addressing the evolving needs of students and schools. According to Lisa Rhodes, the foundation’s executive director, the number of students receiving free and reduced lunches has risen considerably over the past few years and the homeless population has grown significantly. A lot of school are facing challenges with their students having trauma-based situations in their homes, such as abuse or a parent in jail.

Rhodes said the foundation reaches out to the schools and to teachers to gather information on the programs and projects that are needed.
Investing in Classrooms: Empowering Teachers and Students
The EFMC actively seeks to infuse private investment into education through various programs. “Our ‘Adopt a Class’ program is essentially a way to infuse private investment into education,” she said. This program allows individuals, families and businesses to support a school. They donate $100 or a multiple of $100 toward the program. This year, we helped bring $150,000 into classrooms through the program.
Crowdfunding also has been used to fund projects. Teachers can go online and itemize what they need, and donors can provide any dollar donation they want.
The foundation provides an innovative project grant opportunity every year. These are bigger projects. The schools can ask for up to $10,000 for a special program.
