Florida's Continuing Education Mandates

In Florida, X-Ray, CT, and MRI technicians are required to hold a valid and current license issued by the Department of Health (DOH) to practice in the state. To maintain their license, Radiology, CT, and MRI technicians in Florida must complete a total of 13 hours (or credits) of continuing education every two years.

General Requirements

To maintain their licensure, Florida requires radiologic technologists to complete continuing education courses. Specifically, technicians must accrue 13 hours of continuing education credits every two years. Of these 13 hours, 12 must be general continuing education credits from DOH-approved or recognized accrediting agencies, such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT®). In addition, a 1 hour of HIV/AIDS Course is required. Additional CE Requirements

All licensees are required to obtain six hours of continuing education which must be acquired within the year preceding the date of renewal. Three of the six hours must be in the Radiologic Sciences, in the core areas of all licenses such as radiation protection, equipment operation and maintenance, image production and evaluation, patient care and management and radiopharmaceuticals.

CRTs are required to obtain 24 CEs in a 2 year period, 4 of which shall be in digital radiography. Limited licensees are required to obtain 24 CEs in a 2 year period, 4 of which shall be in digital radiography. Mammography licensees are required to obtain 24 hours in a two-year period, 10 of which must be in mammography. Courses must be in subjects related to the application of X-ray to the human body" may include X-ray administration, X-ray management, X-ray pathology, X-ray diagnosis and X-ray quality control. Limited operators are required to obtain 12 hours in a 2 year period. CEUs must be obtained through a provider approved by the Department. All licensees are required to obtain a minimum of 24 CEUs during each two-year license renewal cycle.

Texas Requirements

Texas Dept requires At least 50% of the required number of hours must be activities which are directly related to the use and application of ionizing forms of radiation to produce diagnostic images and/or administer treatment to human beings for medical purposes.

ARRT® Continuing Qualifications Requirements (CQR)

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT®) has implemented Continuing Qualifications Requirements (CQR) to ensure technologists maintain their expertise throughout their careers. Technologists who earned their credentials on or after January 1, 2011, must complete CQR every 10 years.

Structured Education

Structured education is a vital component of certification and registration using the postprimary pathway. You’ll need to complete your structured education requirements within the 24 months before you submit a postprimary application.

CQR Process

CQR helps technologists identify knowledge and skill gaps compared to current entry-level qualifications. It involves a self-assessment and the development of a plan to refresh understanding and abilities. Targeted CE is assigned only if a standard is not met in a category on the SSA. The Structured Self Assessment Content Specifications are provided to assist technologists during their CQR compliance period. Its purpose is to prepare technologists for the SSA and to help education providers develop coursework for the technologists who need to address specified areas with targeted continuing education.
