Army Green to Gold Scholarship: An Opportunity for Enlisted Soldiers

The Army Green to Gold Program presents enlisted soldiers with a pathway to becoming commissioned Army officers. By participating in the ROTC leadership program, soldiers can pursue either a baccalaureate or graduate degree. This program offers several options tailored to different needs and circumstances.

Green to Gold Options

There are a number of Green to Gold options available:

  • Green to Gold Scholarship Option: Selected soldiers transition from active duty to full-time college students. This scholarship covers tuition and fees, or provides room and board, along with stipends and book allowances.
  • Green to Gold Active Duty Option: Selected soldiers remain on active duty and are reassigned to a university. Soldiers retain their pay and allowances while completing their degree.
  • Green to Gold Non-Scholarship Option: Qualified soldiers leave active duty to attend college and receive a monthly stipend.

Green to Gold Scholarship Option

This option allows selected soldiers to leave active duty status to attend college full-time. It can be a two, three, or four-year program. The Army will cover 100% of tuition and fees (whether in-State or out-of-State) OR up to $12,000 per year for room and board fees, plus $600 per semester for books, and a monthly stipend of $420 for the 10 academic months that classes are in session (August - May).

Green to Gold Active Duty Option

Selected Soldiers will remain on Active Duty and be reassigned to the university location. The soldier must be able to complete their degree requirements in two years. Soldiers will retain their current pay and allowances while completing their last two years of school. The Soldier is responsible for paying for the cost of attending school (tuition, fees, & books); most Soldiers elect to use their GI benefits to cover the cost of school.

Green to Gold Non-Scholarship Option

Qualified soldiers leave active duty status to attend college. The soldier must be able to complete their degree requirements in two years. The Army will provide a monthly stipend ($420).

Army ROTC Green to Gold Division Commander’s Hip Pocket Scholarship

This selective program allows applicants to complete their bachelor’s degree and earn a commission as an Army Officer through the Army ROTC scholarship program. A chain of command can recommend individuals with a record of outstanding service and potential for the program.

Army ROTC Scholarship Benefits

Participating in Army ROTC provides numerous financial benefits, including:

  • 100% coverage for full tuition and fees or receive $6,000 per semester for room and board
  • $420 per month for personal expenses
  • $1,200 per year for books

ROTC National Scholarship for High School Students

This four-year scholarship is for college-bound high school seniors. Students interested in attending FIU and enrolling in Army ROTC can start applying for the scholarship at the beginning of their senior year. The ROTC National Scholarship is extremely competitive and is awarded three times per year.

Eligibility Requirements for Green to Gold Active Duty Option Scholarship

The Green to Gold Active Duty Option Scholarship offers soldiers the opportunity to remain in the Army while attending college to participate in Army ROTC. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Must have served at least 2 but less than 10 years on active duty.
  • Must have completed at least 2 years of college to complete a bachelor's or master's degree within 21 months.
  • Must have a cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must have a General Technical (GT) score of 110 or higher.
  • Must have a recent (within the past 6 months) Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) score of 180 or higher (including 60 points in each event).
  • Must be under 30 years of age when they graduate.

Obligations and Commitments

Soldiers participating in this program remain on active duty while attending a college or university with an Army ROTC unit on campus. Participants must successfully complete military science classes, professional military education, the Leader Development and Assessment Course, and any other requirements for commissioning. Upon graduation, they are commissioned as second lieutenants and are required to serve in the military for 8 years. This can be fulfilled by serving as an officer part-time in either the Army National Guard, Army Reserve or full-time on active duty.

Application Process

The application period for the Green to Gold Scholarship typically opens on September 1st and closes on November 1st. For the upcoming cycle, the application opens on 9/1/2025 and closes on 11/1/2025. Active Duty Soldiers can complete the examination by visiting their local military physician; follow these detailed instructions on completing each form. Examples for all waivers (Age, Dependent, Civil, Active Federal Service, Time in Service, and Service Obligation).

Additional Information

When applying, applicants may be asked to provide the first and last names of the person who referred them, along with their Department of Defense identification number (DoD ID #) for proof of service and phone number if they want to receive status updates.
