Academic Advising
Each student is assigned an academic advisor selected from among the faculty. A faculty advisor is assigned to each first-year and transfer student. Advisors assist students in defining their academic goals and addressing issues related to their academic work. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors regularly, with at least two formal appointments per year.
Major and Minor Programs
Each student must complete at least one major, with a limit of two majors allowed. Requirements for the major program are those in place at the time the student declares their major. Students should consult with the department of their major or the Registrar’s Office for specific requirements. The College also offers minor programs, allowing students to declare one or two minors in fields of special interest, although minors are not required. A certain number of hours in the minor area of study must be taken at Hanover College, and a student may not elect a minor in the same discipline as their major. Minors must be formally declared prior to graduation.
Self-Designed Majors
Students have the option to create a self-designed major, allowing them to integrate two or more liberal arts disciplines in the analysis of a specific set of questions. This requires identifying a central disciplinary core and methodology and consulting with a faculty member in the core discipline. The student must then write a proposal for the self-designed major, which is reviewed by an advisory committee.
Credit Options
Hanover College offers various credit options, including:
- Advanced Placement (AP) Credit: Credit may be granted for AP exams with a score of 4 or 5, with specific equivalencies determined by the relevant department.
- College Credit Recommendations (CCR) and Areas of Competency and Engagement (ACEs): Students may earn credit for courses that are not equivalent to CCRs and ACEs or major courses, potentially earning elective credit.
- Summer Term Credits: Hanover College offers classes during three possible Summer terms. Credits from other institutions may be accepted for credit at Hanover, subject to approval.
Enrollment and Course Policies
- Normal Load: The normal course load is four course units during the Fall and Winter Terms and one course unit during the Spring Term. Students may take additional courses under certain conditions.
- Full-Time Status: Students must be enrolled in at least three course units during the Fall or Winter Term and at least one course unit during Spring Term to maintain full-time status.
- Repeating Courses: Students may repeat a course, but both grades will appear on the transcript, with only the higher grade calculated into the GPA.
- Auditing Courses: Students may audit courses with permission from the instructor and advisor.
Withdrawal Policies
- Withdrawal from a Course: Students may withdraw from a course within a prescribed time frame, potentially impacting their ability to meet general degree requirements.
- Withdrawal from the College: Students must obtain prior approval from the Registrar to withdraw from the College.
Grading and Academic Standing
Hanover College utilizes a standard grading system, with grade point averages calculated at the end of each grading period.

Academic Probation and Dismissal
Students who fail to maintain a satisfactory grade point average may be placed on academic probation. Students on probation have access to a faculty or staff Student Success Coach. Continued poor performance may result in academic dismissal. Students have the right to appeal dismissal decisions based on extenuating circumstances.
Academic Integrity
Acting with academic integrity is paramount at Hanover College. Behaviors inconsistent with honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage undermine learning. Violations of academic integrity may result in disciplinary action, including failing grades and dismissal from the College.
Graduation Honors and Awards
Hanover College recognizes academic excellence through various honors and awards.
