Harbor-UCLA Anesthesiology Residency Program: A Comprehensive Overview

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a four-year categorical program designed to cultivate competent anesthesiologists capable of effectively and safely managing patients across diverse clinical settings. Program Structure and Size

The residency program consists of 36 Anesthesiology residents, distributed across four postgraduate year (PGY) levels: 9 PGY-1s, 9 PGY-2s, 9 PGY-3s, and 8 PGY-4s. This structure facilitates comprehensive exposure to all aspects of anesthesiology, with personalized instruction from dedicated faculty throughout the training period.

Training Environment and Facilities

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has moved into a new building housing 16 new operating rooms with the latest amenities and equipment. The primary training site is the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRUMC), a 520-bed, 1,050,000-square-foot, Level I Trauma Center and Pediatric Critical Care Center. RRUMC offers patient care in nearly all medical specialties and is renowned for its state-of-the-art medical facilities, beautiful architecture, and stunning art collection, including works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA): A non-profit pediatric hospital providing care for children and adolescents with a wide range of medical conditions.
MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center: A non-profit hospital known for its exceptional cardiac care and Level II Trauma Center.
West LA VA Medical Center: Providing healthcare services to veterans in Los Angeles, including primary care, mental health care, specialty care, and rehabilitation services.

Curriculum and Rotations

Application Process and Requirements

Applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and all selections for first-year resident positions are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

The program only accepts J-1 visas sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Salary and Benefits

Residents receive competitive salaries in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement established by the Committee of Interns and Residents. Additional benefits include health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, meal stipends during rotations, and educational allowances.
