College Football 25: A Celebration of the Sport

Nostalgia can be a powerful force, often leading us to believe that the past was somehow better. For many college football fans, the return of the NCAA Football franchise after an 11-year hiatus evokes precisely that feeling. "College Football 25" aims to recapture the magic of those earlier games while incorporating the significant changes that have swept the sport in recent years.

Back Story

The discontinuation of the original NCAA Football series stemmed from the NCAA's prohibition against compensating players for the use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The landscape of college football has since undergone a dramatic transformation, with the advent of NIL deals, unlimited transfers, and conference realignment. "College Football 25" arrives in this new era, seeking to provide a gaming experience that honors the sport's traditions while acknowledging its evolution.

Gameplay: Smooth, Realistic, and Customizable

The gameplay in "College Football 25" is incredibly smooth and quick, a significant leap forward from its predecessors. It also feels different from Madden 24. Running the ball is more fun than it’s ever been. Whether you're a hardcore gamer seeking deep customization options or a casual player looking for an accessible experience, the game offers a range of settings to accommodate different skill levels and preferences.

Passing and Kicking Adjustments

Passing requires an adjustment due to the new "revamped" passing game, which features a meter over the receiver's head that affects throw quality. However, a classic passing mode is available for those who prefer a more straightforward approach. Kicking is challenging, with a two-part meter that demands precision in both accuracy and power. Special teams, in general, are an adventure.

Defensive Challenges and Playbook Depth

Tackling is more difficult, requiring precise timing and proper wrapping up to prevent the ball carrier from breaking free. Playing defense is tougher than ever, demanding strategic adjustments and skillful execution. The game boasts an impressive depth of playbooks, offering a wide array of offensive options, including read-option plays, RPOs (run-pass options), triple-option plays, and even the Wildcat formation in certain playbooks.

Strategic CPU

The CPU demonstrates enhanced insight and skill, recognizing play repetition and adjusting its tempo accordingly. On fourth-and-1 situations, the defense sells out to stop the run.

Minor Glitches

The only gameplay glitch encountered was an offside penalty caused by a defensive lineman floating to the wrong side of the line of scrimmage during a no-huddle situation. Occasional lag may occur during the transition between play selection and game action.

Small Details

The D-pad can be used to change the camera angle, including all-22 and sideline views. The two-minute warning is a significant mental adjustment that fans will experience in real life this season. Kneeling the ball to end the game speeds up the clock.

Dynasty Mode: Deep, Intricate, and Engaging

Dynasty mode receives high praise for its depth, intricacy, and overall engagement. It allows players to take control of a college football program and guide it to national prominence through recruiting, player development, and strategic game management.

Recruiting Dynamics

Recruiting is a crucial aspect of Dynasty mode, with players needing to scout and pursue top prospects to improve their team's talent level. The game incorporates realistic recruiting dynamics, with Power 4 schools often dominating the pursuit of highly-rated players. The days of a Group of 5 program landing a five-star prospect are gone. The transfer portal adds another layer to roster management, allowing players to acquire talent from other schools.

Coaching Archetypes and Skill Points

The game features three coaching archetypes: Motivator, Tactician, and Recruiter. Each archetype offers unique skill points that can influence various aspects of the game.

Active Recruiting

Recruiting actions are "active" and ongoing, carrying over week to week, reducing the need for constant recommitment. The game provides a "recommended" option to help players identify realistic recruiting targets.

Customization Options

While the editing of real-life players is limited to their equipment, new prospects can have their names, positions, handedness, physique, and QB style edited once they’re on your team.

Coaching Carousel

You can fire your assistant coaches in this game for the first time, and it has to be done before the bowl games. You can then hire replacements in the ensuing weeks during bowl season. The game recognizes coaching alma maters, potentially opening up opportunities at those schools.

Custom Conferences

Conferences require between four and 20 teams. Custom conferences can be changed every offseason.

Dynasty Mode Shortcomings

Multiplayer Dynasty is still only available for online play. Also, the game doesn’t play fight songs over the menus, just a drumline. And when you’re a few hours into Dynasty or Road to Glory, the drumline can become very annoying.

Road to Glory: A Personalized Journey

Road to Glory (RTG) mode allows players to create a custom player and guide them through their college football career. The mode has been streamlined and expanded, offering a personalized and engaging experience.

Streamlined Experience

The high school stage has been removed, allowing players to immediately jump into their college careers. Players can choose their skill level, from a two-star to a five-star.

Weekly Agenda

Each week, players go through a practice drill, use skill points on the “agenda” and play/sim a game. There are five agenda items each week, and you have to choose where to put your time: academics, team building, recovery, training and socializing.

Dynamic Interactions

Throughout the season, players receive texts from the media, coaches, teammates, classmates, academic advisors, and businesses, creating a dynamic and immersive experience.

Consequences

Choices made throughout the season can have consequences, such as losing Coach Trust points for attending a party or affecting GPA due to academic dishonesty.

Transfer Options

Just like in real life, players can transfer every season.

Other Game Modes

Road to the CFP

Road to the CFP is an online season-type mode in which you play against gamers at your same skill level.

Ultimate Team

Ultimate Team allows players to build their dream team by collecting player cards and competing against other players online. This mode features microtransactions.

Team Builder

Details about the new Team Builder remain scarce.
