GPA: The Key Academic Indicator

The average GPA at Indiana University Bloomington is 3.76. This signifies that Indiana University Bloomington requires you to be above average in your high school class. To be a competitive applicant, you'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's.

For students concerned about a GPA that falls at or below the school average of 3.76, a higher SAT or ACT score can compensate and demonstrate preparedness for college academics. You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes. However, if you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications.

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT Requirements

Indiana University Bloomington has indicated that the SAT or ACT is required for some applicants. If you're applying to this and other schools, it's safest to take the SAT or ACT. While many schools claim to have no strict SAT score cutoff, a hidden SAT requirement often exists.

SAT Scores

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1180, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1390. In other words, a 1180 places you below average, while a 1390 will move you up to above average. Indiana University Bloomington also practices "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Indiana University Bloomington will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore.

Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Indiana University Bloomington forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1180, it is strongly recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.

ACT Scores

The average ACT score at Indiana University Bloomington is 30. The 25th percentile ACT score is 27, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 33. When you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 27 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.

Indiana University Bloomington does in fact offer an ACT superscore policy. We superscore, which means we'll consider your best test scores. Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, Indiana University Bloomington will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them into the best possible composite score. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Indiana University Bloomington forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 27, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it. Additional Considerations for Specific Programs

O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs

Admission to the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs is based primarily on your academic record, and you must complete certain admission requirements prior to application. Students must have at least 12 credits to be considered for admission. Students above 75 credit hours are eligible for admission, but must make an appointment with Pre-O’Neill advisor.

Meeting admission eligibility does not guarantee admission; O’Neill will assess each application individually through a holistic review of a student's academic performance including (but not limited to) cumulative GPA, semester GPA, O’Neill GPA, essay, etc. All students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to continue as an O'Neill Prep student.

A minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.000 is required for the B.S. degrees. In addition, a SPEA core and major/concentration GPA of 2.300 must be maintained in order to graduate. The Law and Public Policy major student must maintain a 2.700 (B-) in the core and major requirements as well as a 2.000 cumulative grade point average in all course work taken at Indiana University in order to graduate. As joint degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the B.S. in Environmental Science and the B.A. in Environmental and Sustainability Studies require a cumulative GPA of 2.000 (C) to graduate.

IU Fort Wayne

IU Fort Wayne offers a test-optional admission path, allowing students to apply with or without SAT or ACT scores. This option is designed for students who feel their academics are not accurately represented by their standardized test scores.

Applying with test scores requires:

An application for admission completed through the Apply IU online application.
A high school transcript that includes your senior year class schedule, sent electronically from your high school.
SAT or ACT scores, self-reported or sent electronically from the testing agency.

Applying without test scores requires:

An application for admission completed through the Apply IU online application.
A high school transcript that includes your senior year class schedule, sent electronically from your high school.

If you apply for admission without test scores, IU Fort Wayne will still review your application for admission without taking your test scores into account. IU Fort Wayne accepts and reviews the SAT and ACT equally. They will take the result you receive from each component of the SAT or ACT and review them with your admission as a superscore. Test-optional refers to the SAT and ACT exams, and those tests are not required for admission or for our international student merit-based scholarships. However, international students may need to provide proof of English proficiency, which could require the submission of TOEFL, IELTS, or DET test scores. If you do submit SAT or ACT scores, they will consider a SAT (Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing) score of 410 or an ACT (English) of 17 as proof of English proficiency.

IU South Bend

Full Admission requirements at IU South Bend include:

At least a B average
Core 40 or Academic Honors Diploma (or an out-of-state equivalent)
High School equivalency exam scores: Pre-2014 GED score of 620/Post-GED score of 165/TASC score of 669/HiSet score of 54
Application for Admission

Students who do not qualify for full admission may be reviewed for conditional admission on a case-by-case basis. Conditional admission factors include GPA, diploma type, SAT/ACT scores (if submitted). To be considered, all students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher on a Core 40/college prep diploma or Pre-2014 GED score of 530/Post-GED score of 150/TASC score of 573/HiSet score of 45.
