Northern Kentucky University (NKU), a public university in Highland Heights, Kentucky, established in 1968, has grown into a comprehensive institution with a diverse student body and a wide range of facilities. A Brief History of Northern Kentucky University

Northern Kentucky University began its journey in 1948 as an extension campus for the University of Kentucky in Covington. Known as the UK Northern Extension Center, it operated for two decades before becoming an autonomous four-year college named Northern Kentucky State College (NKSC) in 1968. W. Frank Steely was appointed as the first president in 1970. The Salmon P. Chase College of Law, formerly an independent law school in Cincinnati, merged with NKSC the following year. In 1972, the main campus relocated from Covington to Highland Heights, and NKSC awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1973. Since gaining university status in 1976, NKU has continuously expanded its campus and academic offerings.

Campus and Location

NKU's campus is situated off Interstate 275 and Interstate 471, seven miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio. Construction began in the early 1970s, with Nunn Hall being the first building to open in 1972. While the majority of students commute daily, approximately 2,000 students reside on campus. Recent years have seen ongoing expansion of the university's campus and facilities, including the Truist Arena, a 9,400-seat arena completed in 2008, and the Student Union, which also opened in 2008. The James C. and Rachel M. Votruba Student Union

The Student Union, officially named the James C. and Rachel M. Votruba Student Union in honor of the university’s fourth president, Dr. James C. Votruba, is a three-level building constructed of poured-in-place concrete with zinc metal panels and clear glazing. Its design emphasizes a bright and airy atmosphere, creating a "main street" feel for the campus community.

Recognition

In 2013, the Student Union was recognized as the favorite building on any college campus in Kentucky through an online vote conducted by the American Institute of Architects Kentucky. The competition featured 170 nominated buildings, with nearly 14,000 votes cast by 5,000 voters. The NKU Student Union emerged as the No. 6 favorite building in the commonwealth, highlighting its significance and popularity among students and the broader community.

Event Hosting

The Student Union serves as a versatile venue for various events, including weddings and other celebrations. Its staff is known for being helpful, friendly, and accommodating, ensuring events run smoothly. The ballroom can be easily adapted for different purposes, such as ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions. The Student Union also provides access to rooms for wedding party preparations and offers catering services with customizable menus to meet specific dietary needs and preferences.

Posting Policy

To maintain an organized and informative environment, the Student Union has a posting policy that regulates the display of notices and advertisements. All posters, flyers, handbills, and banners must be authorized and stamped by the Student Union management, located at the Student Union Information Desk on the 2nd floor. The management stamp indicates a review of the requestor's permission to post notices and does not indicate an endorsement of content. Posting is generally restricted to the promotion of campus-related activities, with the time, date, location, and sponsor of the event clearly displayed. Advertisements for off-campus functions are typically not authorized unless sponsored by a registered student organization or a University department.

Northern Kentucky University disclaims responsibility for the contents of posted materials, and students, faculty, staff, and administrators are expected to adhere to laws regarding libel, defamation, obscenity, and fair labor relations. Posters promoting establishments that sell alcoholic beverages or relating to alcohol will not be approved.

Certain bulletin boards are designated as open bulletin boards for student-placed notices, such as advertisements for sales, tutoring, and carpools. These notices do not require authorization or stamping by the Student Union management. Registered student organizations and University departments are responsible for removing their posted notices by the stamped expiration date. Violations of this policy may result in warnings from Student Union management. Campus buildings are periodically inspected to ensure compliance with the posting policy.

Academic and Student Life at NKU

Northern Kentucky University offers a wide range of academic programs organized into seven colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Informatics, Health, and the Salmon P. Chase College of Law. The College of Informatics, founded in 2006, replaced the College of Professional Studies. In July 2015, the School of the Arts was created, uniting the Music, Theatre & Dance, and Visual Arts programs within the College of Arts & Sciences.

Campus Media and Organizations

NKU students are actively involved in various extracurricular activities, including honor societies, fraternities, and sororities. NorseMediaTV, the university's PEG access Public-access television cable TV station, airs on Cincinnati Bell Fioptics and Insight Cable of Northern Kentucky. Students and faculty produce original programs, a weekly talk show, sporting events coverage, and entertainment programming, which have won awards at local, regional, and national levels.

Athletics

The university's athletic teams are known as the "Norse," with Victor E. Viking as their mascot. In addition to varsity sports, students have organized club teams in bowling, ice hockey, men's soccer, taekwondo, fencing, boxing, lacrosse, rugby, kickball, skeet & trap, and men's wrestling.

Alumni

Northern Kentucky University has a substantial alumni network of over 60,000 living alumni, with approximately 41,000 residing in Ohio and Kentucky.
