Understanding the Scholarship Landscape at Northwestern Pritzker Law

Northwestern Pritzker Law administers an extensive program of scholarships and grants, all of which are awarded on a combined basis of merit and financial need. These awards are made available by endowed funds, generous gifts from alumni, and general funds from the University. The Law School recognizes that although the need for public interest lawyers is strong, many organizations lack the funding to offer entry-level opportunities. At this moment of change in our society and the legal profession, Northwestern Pritzker Law is building its next chapter of innovation that makes a difference.

General Scholarship Information for JD Candidates

The Law School awards scholarships to admitted applicants on a rolling basis after an offer of admission has been made. To receive full consideration for scholarship assistance, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid must receive your complete financial aid application by the priority deadline stated following your offer of admission. Northwestern Pritzker School of Law does not award any conditional scholarships.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

At Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, applying for financial aid, including scholarships, is separate from and follows after the admissions process. An admitted student's application for financial aid may involve submitting the FAFSA, a University Aid Application, and income information, depending on whether the incoming student is applying for scholarships, loans, or both. Students receiving loan funding must reapply for loan funding each academic year. Reapplying for loan funding as a continuing student will involve submitting the FAFSA and University Aid Application; scholarships awarded when you were admitted automatically renew as long as you remain in good academic standing.

Specific Scholarship Programs and Opportunities

Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)

For graduates who accept lower-paying public interest jobs and have substantial education debt, Northwestern Law offers an innovative Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), developed and revised by a group of students, administrators, and faculty. Northwestern Pritzker Law is committed to supporting graduates who pursue legal careers in the public interest. The program has been revised over the years to respond to changes in salaries and student loan debt. LRAP was recently revised in 2024 to align with federal income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. Our LRAP Program helps graduates with an adjusted gross income (AGI) up to $105,000 repay their student loans. Participants in the program with an annual AGI of $85,000 or less can receive benefits covering 100% of their IDR payment. Those with an AGI between $85,001 and $105,000 will receive benefits based on their income. The LRAP program is supported in large part by the generosity of the Estate of Dawn Clark Netsch (JD '52).

Public Interest Summer Funding

Each year the Law School awards one full-tuition scholarship to a student who demonstrates a strong commitment to public interest during their law school summers. The funding is available for JD students doing legal work supervised by an attorney for non-profit or government agencies during the summer. In addition, thanks to generous gifts from alumni, the law school offers several named fellowships to support public interest students with summer funding.

Post-Graduate Fellowships

The post-graduate fellowships launch public interest careers of dedicated graduates by providing a $50,000 salary and health care benefits to work for one year as a lawyer at a domestic nonprofit or government agency of the graduate’s choice. After a year as a fellow, recipients gain the experience needed to be hired for competitive public interest positions. Each year five to eight graduating students are awarded the fellowship through a competitive process. The Law School offers bar study grants to support graduating students pursuing public interest careers.

Student Funded Public Interest Fellowship (SFPIF)

SFPIF’s primary focus is providing funding for 3L students who have unique funding needs such as bar exam preparation and bar application fees, on top of summer living expenses. To bridge the financial gap between graduation and the start of a job (usually in late summer/early fall for public interest positions) and prevent them from having to work while studying for the bar exam, 3Ls preparing for a career in public interest get the bulk of the funding. The remainder goes to 1Ls and 2Ls to “top off” the funding given to them through the school.

LLM in International Human Rights Program Scholarships

Applicants admitted to the LLM in International Human Rights Program will receive a scholarship application with their letter of admission. Scholarships typically only cover a portion of tuition costs.

Tax Program Scholarships

The Northwestern Pritzker School of Law Tax Program offers a number of merit based scholarships to full-time students. Admitted applicants are automatically under consideration for a scholarship award; no additional application is necessary. Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis beginning in mid-January.

Dean’s Scholarship

The Dean’s Scholarship is the highest award that is given to students in the Tax Program. Recipients receive a full-tuition scholarship and a position on the editorial board of the Tax Lawyer publication. Applicants who wish to be considered for a Dean's Scholarship should apply by January 15, for full consideration.

Tax Program Faculty Scholarship Award

The Tax Program Faculty Scholarship Award will provide highly qualified students with a $40,000 scholarship to be applied towards the cost of tuition.

Tax Program Alumni Scholarship

Funding for the Tax Program Alumni Scholarship is provided by alumni donations. The Northwestern Law Tax Program administers merit-based scholarships to incoming students. The Tax Program application can be found online.

Academic Excellence and Program Highlights

In the rigorous first year of study, Northwestern Pritzker Law provides a foundation in legal reasoning, analysis, and writing, as well as a thorough understanding of the structures and policies of the law. Communication, teamwork, cross-training in business, and experiential learning are also hallmarks of the Northwestern Law curriculum. The JD program requires 85 semester hours of credit. The broad and flexible curriculum gives upper-level students the opportunity to specialize in particular areas, to pursue advanced research in legal theory, or to pursue a range of hands-on simulation, externship, and live-client opportunities. Bluhm Legal Clinic

In Northwestern Pritzker Law’s comprehensive clinical program, students learn strong litigation and negotiation skills and gain direct experience representing clients and reforming laws. Housing more than 20 clinics within 13 centers, the Bluhm Legal Clinic is widely recognized as one of the best legal clinics in the country. The clinic centers are nationally recognized for their direct involvement in legal reform. Students represent underserved clients as well as challenge the fairness of our legal institutions and propose solutions for reform. Working in teams, they assist small business owners and prepare cases in juvenile justice, immigration and asylum, and criminal matters.

Donald Pritzker Entrepreneurship Law Center (DPELC)

Additionally, the Donald Pritzker Entrepreneurship Law Center (DPELC), originally founded as the Small Business Opportunity Center more than 15 years ago, created one of the first programs in the United States to provide intensive, hands-on training for students who want to be transactional lawyers or founders of start-up companies.

Joint Degree Programs

A combined program in law and business, jointly offered with Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, enables students to earn both a JD from the Law School and an MBA degree from Kellogg after only three years of study. Students who wish to specialize in the study of tax law can earn an LLM in Taxation or pursue a JD and an LLM in Taxation at the same time. Students educated outside the United States can earn an LLM through a 9-month program of advanced study.

Student Life and Career Opportunities

Northwestern Pritzker Law students take an intense and energetic interest in their community and education. Six scholarly journals are available for research, writing, and editing. Students automatically belong to the Student Bar Association, which gives them a voice in curriculum and administration, and students have an opportunity to participate in more than 50 student organizations. Our students also enjoy Chicago’s sophisticated yet friendly atmosphere, along with its world-class cultural, sports, and entertainment offerings. The Center for Career Strategy and Advancement proactively cultivates relationships with potential employers while supporting students as they develop short- and long-term career goals and strategies. Traditionally, more than 600 national employers recruit our students. Nearly 75 percent of the recruiters are based in regions outside the Midwest.

Based on the 2025 ABA 509 Report, 7976 candidates submitted JD applications to Northwestern Law School and 981 received acceptance letters. This means that of the 981 applicants who received law school acceptance letters, 245 chose to enroll.
