Navigating Student Accounts at Norfolk State University: A Comprehensive Guide
Norfolk State University (NSU) offers a range of services and options related to student accounts, designed to help students manage their tuition, fees, and other costs effectively. This article provides a detailed overview of these services, payment options, financial aid, and other important aspects of student accounts at NSU.
Payment Options
NSU provides several convenient methods for students to pay their tuition, fees, room and meal costs:
- Online Payments: Students can make payments via Spartan Self Service on MyNsu using debit/credit cards with VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover logos.
- Cashier’s Office: Balances can be paid at the Cashier’s Office with cash, personal checks (starter checks not accepted), Cashier’s Checks, Money Orders, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or SpartanCard.
- Phone Payments: Payments can also be made by calling 757.823.8545.
- Postal Service Delivery: Payments can be sent via mail.
Financial Aid
Students can utilize a combination of financial aid grants, loans (Ford Direct, Parent Plus, alternative/private), and scholarships to cover their expenses. It's crucial to understand how these different forms of aid are applied to student accounts.
Non-University Scholarships
Non-university scholarships are not immediately credited toward tuition, fees, room and board charges. These funds are applied only after they are received from the granting organization. However, these awards may be considered as anticipated financial aid when establishing payment plans and included in the total amount of aid that will be used toward payment of University expenses.
Parent Plus and Alternative/Private Loans
It is important to note that Parent Plus and alternative/private loans must be approved by the lender. The loan application and approval must be received in the Financial Aid office prior to the class cancellation deadline. Furthermore, Student Accounts must be notified before credit can be given for the loan amount. To ensure timely processing, students are advised to apply for financial aid funding early.

Nelnet Payment Plan
The Nelnet payment plan is available to all students who owe a balance. This plan allows students to break down their payments into more manageable installments, making it easier to budget for college expenses.
Third-Party / Sponsored Billing
NSU also offers third-party/sponsored billing, which is an arrangement where the university bills the student’s third-party sponsor for authorized charges on the student’s behalf. In these cases, the third-party sponsor requires a bill from the University before remitting payment. Students who wish to enroll in third-party sponsored billing must submit a billing authorization from the third-party sponsor to Norfolk State University’s Office of Student Accounts prior to or at the time of registration.
It is important to understand that third-party/sponsored billing is not the same as tuition reimbursement between a student and an employer or other organization. Under tuition reimbursement, a student is required to prove they already paid for tuition and fees and earned certain grades before they can request reimbursement directly from an employer or other organization.
Student Accounts & Cashiering
The Student Accounts & Cashiering office provides all financial management and accounting for university students. Their responsibilities include:
- Billing student tuition and fees
- Processing payments for tuition and fees
- Processing adjustments on accounts
- Issuing refunds
The office strives to provide polite and professional service to all customers.

Spartans All Inclusive Learning (SAIL)
Spartans All Inclusive Learning (SAIL) is a course material model that reduces the cost of materials for students and ensures they have all their materials across all courses prior to the first day of class. Instead of purchasing materials a la carte, the cost will be included in their tuition or as a charge.
